They can just buy machine guns. No pre sample, no post sample. Their machine guns are factory guns and not converted semi autos.
European guns are of course more commonly encountered. But it is my understanding that gun dealers can import just about anything from anywhere so all that global "military surplus" is available.
When Germany retired the G3, the US bought parts kits and some "post samples" while Switzerland was simply able to buy G3s.
It's hard to be a ACLU hating, philosophically Libertarian, socially liberal, fiscally conservative, scientifically grounded, agnostic, porn admiring gun owner who believes in self determination.

Some people believe it may have been an IDF sniper rifle. A couple of decades ago it was apparently quite easy to buy guns in Europe (Belgium, UK) and import them in Switzerland

I took it to the 50 m outdoor range today, semi-auto only. It performed flawlessly, not a single hiccup. The good old .308 turned some heads too.
