As requested in other thread on the death of the queen to add a separate threads on the general topic, why anyone cares about the monarchy/royalty from another nation, one we fought a war with to kick the hell out, is a mystery to me. The very term "royalty" makes my skin crawl and always has. Royalty, the term and very concept, the antithesis of everything we are and and stand for, as much if not more so that communism, dictatorship, etc. It's nothing more than (usually inbred...) people who are dictators by blood. I never game a damn about Lady Diana, etc etc. Any 'Murican who cares what the Monarchs of the UK do, is similar the the dumb kid wearing a Che Guevara shirt, a romanticized view of a monster. I recall back in the day every US TV channel covering Charles and Lady Diana wedding, and irked me then too.
I reject the term and concept of royalty as I do communism, socialism, dictatorship, et al, or anything else that's the total opposite of Liberty and Freedom, and no amount of nostalgia will change that.
The current royal family now amounts to a tourist attraction for the Brits and cost their tax payers bigly. I have heard some claim they generate more $ from tourism and related than cost, but I have my doubts. What did "the royals" ever do for the average Brit? It's a mystery to me why they are tolerated at all there, but not my country, not my problem, but again, all seems to come down to wishing for simpler times gone by (which sucked nads for the average Brit under royal rule...) and nostalgia and tradition.
While the royals are now symbolic, they're symbolic of everything we reject and should reject, so and no amount of Disney level princess nonsense and nostalgia will alter that reality.
