I was thinking today after looking around that people are still going on about stuff to buy. Some widget….

A different coast has given me a different attitude. Everything else was kind of a toy. Been picking away more at the MNQ but more range has given me a chance to test my steadiness and…I am getting older.

But while I don’t have my Colt at present, I do have my HK. It is the MacBook Pro of ARs. It’s steep entry but you get a great barrel, a decent trigger, and just add a G rail and you would have almost spent as much building up a decent Colt.

Someone will go on about chrome lining but it got super humid in Georgia and I never had a problem and I wasn’t super anal about cleaning it.
I’m not saying it’s the right answer but it’s right for me.

I would almost sooner get another HK than another gas gun and I’m not a person that think pistons are “better”.

I just wish ammo was cheaper.

All of my HK AR’s are the most accurate rifles I own.

They’re lasers and the barrels are simply outstanding.

For reasons I can't explain, my "fun time" lately has been about trying to set up a great load for shooting varmint. Sure, I still hit the range and train, do drills, etc, but it's been interesting trying to develop a different load being that I can't find my go-to bullets anymore (77gr TMKs).

As far as what people should be doing:
-Always confirm zero
-figure out mechanical accuracy of equipment
-set performance goals
-chase those goals under realistic conditions
-repeat

I actually think it's even simpler than that.

Either you can shoot or you can't shoot. FALs are not notoriously accurate, and when it comes to mechanical accuracy they simply are NOT an AR-10 variant, however I know a couple people who have been shooting them almost exclusively since the mid 80s and they can outshoot most of the folks on the bench regardless of what rifle they happen to own.

I got my first 91 back in 1983 and I shoot it as well as anything. The only thing that has really changed is eyesight so optics help.

I find myself lately working on improving my hit percentage at 100 yds with a M9. I’m not sure if its a useful pursuit, but whatever.

Last month I worked on tightening my cone of fire off bipod.

I’ve been doing a good bit of coaching lately with AKs. Underfolders have SARS, btw. US .30 cans make AKs toss brass over the target shed. Laser discipline is an ongoing thing. Unsuppressed AKs don’t seem quite as loud as unsuppressed M4s. Like, I’ve always known that, but I’m noticing it more.

I am tired of the internet dogma:

1. I enjoy shooting my underfolder AK type rifle. It suits me just fine with its modified m14 accessory rail, ultimak tube, and amber dot trijicon ACOG reflex. It's ugly.

2. I drifted my glock sights to correct the left grouping. Too many videos and too many charts explaining proper glock finger technique. My 1994 G27 with original springs and BUG serial number prefix still shoots better than my 9mm glocks. Oh well.

3. Any time spent on trigger is a good time. I have thoroughly enjoyed training up my sons and their friends with pellet rifles in the backyard. It is no surprise that many of the youth that have tried out the backyard pellet range have never fired a shot.

4. I have been spending much more time practicing positional shooting. No one else does it at the range I frequent. Standing, kneeling, etc...

This actually spoke to me. I feel I was happiest shooting before I knew there were people arguing about it.
My HK helped me rediscover it, not because it is an HK but it’s all I thought to bring with me. Mostly iron sights. It’s not the M60-like pig people make it out to be. The magazine compatibility only comes up with gen 2 pmags. If anything it makes me want to do the All American A2 build I have wanted to do for 5 years now.

I sometimes miss an FAL although I would never buy one again.
If anything I have realized that I only need maybe two really good ARs. They aren’t golf clubs.

The older I get (48 now) the more confidence I gain in my personal experiences AND the less I care about gizmos and gadgets. It is almost like my Neanderthal brain reverts back to what defines us as basic marksmen. The pure pleasure of simple sight use and trigger technique will always be what sets the foundation for a hit. The things we learned as children punching holes in Dad's empty Rainier Beer cans are still relevant. These same joys are now present in my son's formative years. Shooting should be fun. It is fun in my household. It is not work. Now that school has started, I am back to one day a week at the local rifle range doing things my way with the older retired guys. My goal is to spend as much time Shooting as I do on this forum.

Last 6 mo has been extended range.
Built up a precision 16" AR with 3-18x
Finally got my skills about where I want from prone and have been moving to barricades, windows, roofs, and vehicle hoods.

Going to hit up a match soon. Its been a great time.

Sporadic LR with Bolt Guns, AR10-ish rifles; 600-1100 yds. Logistics problematic with running to Ranch and back home with any regularity.

Weekly handgun Drills with a few of the Lads. Achieving a higher degree of proficiency with several participants this year.
Occasional "2 gun" using AR9s- Fudd Range Rules prohibit "Bottle Neck Cartridges" on our Fun Range.
