    HOSTAGES on HBOMax...

If you are of a certain age, the Iranian hostage crisis was a defining moment and shaped your world view. But if you were very young, as I was, you only understood part of the events.

The four part HBO documentary "Hostages" is a comprehensive history of the event, everything that led up to it and why it happened. It is amazingly objective for a documentary, simply presenting the events without taking any sides and presenting the views of all sides involved.

It has some uncanny details, things I never heard or read about even in my later study of things.

And of course, some unexpected firearms. Prior to the revolution Iran has a HK contract facility so while the rest of the area was running around with AKs, Iran's primary military rifle was the G3.

A word of warning, this one pulls no punches. It can sometimes be troubling to watch, nothing on the scale of 9-11, but if you knew anyone involved in any way, it will bring all of that back.

If you thought ARGO was an excellent film (which I did), this is the rest of the story.

Argo was so good, I'll have to check this one out. My wife and I enjoy docuseries and history, so this should be great. We also like these new 3 or 4 or 5 part quick series that do not get lost in season 4 !

    Thanks for the tip.

Argo was more interesting then I thought it would be, and I am currently watching Hostages. It is interesting, but man I wanted Iran to get lit up for it.

I want add another thing. It goes to show a revolution may not turn out as hoped, which is well known from history. All those who thought if only the Shah were gone all would become better, which of course it did not. It only became worse.

And they have only themselves to blame. I'm still all for whacking out Masoumeh Ebtekar. The fact that she has held several prominent positions in the current Iranian government demonstrates why there can be no diplomacy of any kind with that country.

Will check it out for sure on your rec. Never saw Argo as I generally can't stand Ben Affleck as both an actor and a person, and didn't know how accurate it was. I'm done with watching "based on true events" type movies that are fictional BS.

Argo was one of those 'based on true events' films, a lot of artistic liberties. Still a great movie.

There were a lot of things going down in Iran that we're just finding out about. No doubt things we may never find out about. That event can be traced right back to us being Britain's bitch in the 50s and doing their dirty work.

Then I will pass. There's no lack of great movies that are not pretending to be based on legit history. Less movies I watch with Ben A in it, the better.
