The entire plan was balzy and classic 'Murica.
Discussed in the docudrama and they were hoping for even minimum Iranian casualties since the hostage takers were students with no real training. Richard Meadows was involved and already IN Iran, he was in charge of exfil.

I just finished watching the series. It brought back old feelings. We should have turned the place into a parking lot. Our grandchildren will probably regret the fact we didn’t...

He did more than just support Operation Eagle Claw. He literally hired mercs to get his people out of Iran. Folks need to read On Wings of Eagles.

I was kind of blown away by all he actually did, plus the fact that he mentioned NONE of it when he ran for President. To think what might have happened if we got him instead of Clinton.

Although true, in part....it is because of widespread stupidity is why we got Clinton and why we are where we are today.

He was very invested in the Vietnam POW situation, too, and very much downplayed it. He had balls of steel and wasn't afraid to put it out there.

You know who also does not get the credit he deserved for that? Carter. If you read Beckwith's book for example, he spoke well of Carter who was clear succeed or not, the buck stopped with him. He gave it the green light, he didn't do what modern politicians would have done, blamed everyone but himself. I don't have to always like his politics to see he is an honorable man. Probably the nicest guy who was POTUS who had no business being POTUS.

You know who gets too much credit for the event? Reagan, but that's another topic...

I think because of Bush (41) with his 89 Import Ban, insulting of deployed family members and criticizing the NRA for calling BS on ATF at Ruby Ridge we got Clinton. That mindset is part of the problem, that R's and D's can do whatever they want and it's always the third party to blame when they lose.

Carter spent too much time trying to make diplomacy work with people who just took over your embassy.

Without a doubt Carter eventually negotiated their release, but there is a reason Iran held them until Reagan was president, they knew they could get away with it.

Carter was the nicest person you could ever meet, but a terrible president. He was thoughtful and intelligent and assumed everyone else was too. He really did believe he could reason with anyone, and that simply isn't the case.

He should have started rolling something like Eagle Claw within 30 days. The operation was actually pretty solid and it was a freak event that caused it to go bad. Had it been successful it might have been a different world. Nobody f'ed with the Brits after their hostage crisis in 1980.
