    3 shots when zeroing
    5 shots to confirm zero

My other hang up is balancing barrel heat with rate of fire. I like to shoot the group without coming off the gun, and in the same position I've built, while the conditions are the same. But with a pencil barrel or a magnum load, you heat up the barrel a bit which can change POI and velocity. It's pretty much mental torture.

‘Internet hero’ … kuddos to Molon, hence my signature!
Given that 10-shots are a group and 5-shots may be a favorable trend ... know that just one good 3-shot group can make you an instant internet superstar!

Thank you molon. Good stuff. I knew the answer but reading this was still informative and entertaining.

I’m all in for 10 shot groups.

My normal grouping is 5 shots, for the exact reasons Markm states.

More than 5 and the holes in the target are limited by my eyes and ability to focus and not the rifle or ammo.

Good on you if you can one hole 10 shot groups. I’m lucky to keep them MOA.

Its not as hard as you think. Heat is non-issue if you are starting with a cold barrel. Done with a Razor 1-10x, not exactly the best for shooting groups.

    Not much, IMO...

Some smart math guy somewhere figured out that 7 was the ideal number: Something to do with the SD, etc.

Other than that it corresponds with the number of our fingers (makes counting easier?), I can't see why ten is the correct number, rather than nine or eleven.

Absolutely. I'm not shooting 10 rounds of 300 WM after stacking 3 holes.

For me, usually 5 does it.
Exactly... Of course a larger sample is better, but returns diminish rapidly, and barrels heat up, etc., just like MarkM said.

Me, too, and it's easy shooting .22 or handguns.

For .22, I shoot 20-shot strings for the chrono, because one of the things I'm looking for is the 1-in-20 or even 1-in-10 oddball... I'm looking at you, Federal!

For handguns, it's easy enough to shoot 15 through the chrono...

To all who responed-THANK YOU. Hitting the range shortly. I too suffer after 5 or shots, but will attempt some 10 round groups with a couple loads.
    Gents I appreciate you.

10-shot groups are required in some contracts.
You'll never make a group smaller by firing more rounds. You will learn a lot more, though.
