Tragedy on tragedy. Imagine being a pilot who FINALLY is able to do one of the things he probably dreamed about as a kid. With a little less responsibility and a little more opportunity, I'm sure I could have been talked into restoring and learning to fly something like a F4U.

I can't imagine actually flying something like a 17, had to be surreal on top of surreal.

Sadly, I know one of the pilots in one of the other fighters too. He was ahead of the accident sequence as well. Lots of good pilots and families are affected by this.

I don't know if it's been mentioned, watching the videos, some are clearer than others, showed the P63 hit the B17 from below right at where the 17 wing was attached to the fuselage frame. The collision separated the 17's entire wing from the fuselage. The front part of the 17 appeared to nose dive into the ground. The wings crashed and exploded as that's where the engine and fuel was stored. The crew properly died from impact and not fire.

    Damn....
First when I heard the crash took the the tail off, I figured it must have been a landing pattern thing, to low to do anything about it but crash, as there is lots of evidence of B17s being flyable with large parts missing.
Didn't realize the P39 chopped the WHOLE back end off, then it rolled over and pancaked.
Looks like the P39 just self-obliterated into a bit of leftover engine/cockpit fuselage.
At least they didn't have any extra passengers on board.

Used to watch the Confederate Air Force take out the warbirds for a spin from the Galveston Air Museum when I was there 25 years ago - they have a sound like nothing else in the sky! My office was less than 2 miles from the runway there on the west end of the island, I'd run out & watch them when they were out. On Armed Forces Day, I watched a Corsair & a Mustang "dogfighting" over the bay from the deck of a Coast Guard Cutter - it was pretty cool. A B17 comes in to the Allegheny Co. airport here in the South Hills for veteran's flights from time to time - same airport the blimps use to cover a Stillers/Pirates or Pitt Panther game. Seeing a Goodyear Blimp at treetop level from less than a mile away is pretty impressive, too.

Reminds me of the news helicopters that crashed here years back killing 2 in each helicopter. Shame that the planes were lost due to someone's major screw up.
