Butt plates are only partially interchangeable in my experience. The A2 butt plates fit nicely on the A1 stocks, but the A1 butt plates don't fit without modification on the A2 stocks.

Been thinking about it and I don't think I tried swapping that direction, always A2 plate in to A1 butt.

Makes sense since the A1 butt plate is not considered an upgrade. Most people want the A2 butt plate. Though I've heard a few guys over the years say they prefer the A1 butt plate because it's smooth and not sharply checkered like the A2.

The M16A2 stock is way too long for me.

As others have noted, it's a fast and easy swap. I have both real and CavArms stocks (with A2 butt plates and doors) and both work.
