    Palmetto Chinese AK Clone

Here's a novelty firearm. I bought it for the heck of it. I have owned a few Chinese AKs over the years. I should have kept them all. Who knew?

The PSA is actually surprisingly close to the original. It no doubt would have been way easier for PSA to build a plain Jane AK with yellow wood and some repro barrel parts. But they went so far as to use a 1.5mm receiver without X and Y stampings and the 1-up 2-down barrel trunnion rivets. Also just a single rivet on each side of the trigger guard instead of two on each side like the European.

    No rounds fired yet.

And then some parts details with a demilled Chicom receiver.

Note the slightly different trigger guard profile on the Chinese and the sort of flared end on the mag release. Also the different style of rear trunnion and different rivet spacing.

The double hook receiver. The PSA hammer and trigger is a single hook style.

So far I have to say I'm pleased. The trigger is good. The oddball assortment of mags all seem to latch in fine. Sights are straight and the paint is smooth and even aside from one sort of bubble near the front sight. The only thing to complain about is the looseness of the gas tube retaining lever. I fixed that by squeezing the latch in a vice.

That looks nice. I wish they would have also put the serial number on the front trunnion like the originals. I understand that they had to put it on the receiver, but having it on the front trunnion too would be cool. The wood looks nice too. I might have to buy a set for my NHM-91 that currently sports a thumbhole stock. Let us know how it shoots.

If nothing else it would be nice to see the Toolcraft markings and caliber info on the trunnion.

    That's actually not bad. I wish they'd make a Type 3.
