So first, I had no idea that China had even finally stepped up with UN deployments, we can criticize them for doing it for reasons of self interests but we should realize those criticisms come from a glass house.

Second, we've fallen down hard in Africa from time to time with BS UN missions, especially when Boutros Boutros-Ghali thought Siad Barre was the guy to "work with" and we ended up needing seals to evac our own embassy.

China will find out eventually, if they continue to "invest" in Africa (and their version of invest is to financially rape and cajole), what every other Western nation has discovered with regards to the Dark Continent: good fvcking luck, the place is corrupt and incompetent as hell. Africa wins every time.

That's the damn truth. China thinks because they aren't imposing their politics or policy that things will be different for them. It won't.

Nothing in Africa is worth it. Not the land, not the gold, not the diamonds, not the oil. Sooner or later the bill will come and it will be more blood and savagery than you could have ever imagined.

Just like the lions single out the weak, the young and the most vulnerable...Africa does the same. You can go in there strong and hard like the Europeans did in the 19th century, but you can't maintain that forever and eventually you will get caught sleeping.

You can go in there reasonable and try to get along, but that just attracts lions.

Anyone who has any real understanding eventually arrives at "Let Africa Sink."

I beleive the Japanese are currently building two Carriers. That's good to know since currently the estimate is the loss of at least two and likely three in a battle with China. I trust Japan to hate China enough to go all "Tora, Tora, Tora" on them.

I've never been to Africa and I have little interest in doing so. Other than Big Game Hunting I fail to have any interest in seeing "The Dark Contenant".
I got bad water in Saudi Arabia and I'm not kidding, that almost killed me, there is nothing but Bad Water, Bad Bugs, Infectuous disease and angry people who want to shoot you in Africa, no thanks.

I watched Cappy's video yesterday, and found the details of the battle interesting. Directly comparing the Chinese performance in the fight to the Rangers in Mogadishu or the 10th Mountain elsewhere in Somalia still doesn't seem to come out well for the Chinese. They seem to lack a crucial element of aggression and willingness to fight it out. Bit of a departure from how the Chinese troops in Korea behaved, but broadly similar to Qing troops during the 1800s into the 1900s.

But yes, having spent some time in Africa, no thanks. Only place worse is Haiti. F@(k that place.

I was the one who mentioned somalia, but I was referring specifically to the evacuation of our embassy. The guys involved in Gothic Serpent were a completely different situation and I believe they did anything and everything anyone could have asked of them.

Yeah, I wasn't specifically replying to any point that been brought up. Just trying to draw comparisons between troop quality and performance in broadly similar settings and situations. While it's important not to read too much into this single incident, China is our single biggest threat at the moment, and understanding their actual military capabilities are important. As mentioned in the video, the relative lack of combat experience of the Chinese military actually makes that difficult. The Russians liked to portray themselves as the "2nd Army of the World" but we've seen how that has played out. The Chinese are likewise trying to portray themselves as a powerful military, but have even less of a basis to back that claim up with. I tend to think that for the Chinese, that's intentional, as they really would rather not fight if it's still possible to achieve their desired ends. If that's the case, it's important to realize when they're likely bluffing.

Meh. Cappy buys into his own propaganda a little to much sometimes.
Hardly what I'd call a "disaster", more like an "average f*** up".
Per the vid, combat experience aside, given nobody knew the ROE, I'm not surprised they turtled. Risk averse leadership.... sound familiar?
Given the thin ice China is on with global perception, it is going to be amusing to watch them keep finding themselves in these typically American conundrums - damned if you do, damned if you don't. Don't respond aggressively enough? People complain you didn't do enough and you suck. Respond with the proper level of aggro? People whine about "how come you hurt the sweet locals like that? Muh imperialism!".
Further, it seems a lot of assessments I've seen on the Chinese military are a bit vague on the willingness or ability of the average Chinese soldier to fight, but DO clearly portray a crap leadership structure that's horribly dated for modern conflict.
It doesn't seem China will be abandoning communism any time soon, so these CCP-induced leadership issues will likely continue into the near-to-mid future at least no matter how much they try to portray themselves as a "modern military". Net win I guess.
