    Need scope/mount advice - Ruger 10/22

Well, now that the majority of the work on what I've taken to calling "Project Desmond" (in honor of the 007 franchise's resident Mad Scientist and the actor who portrayed him) has drawn to a close, it's time to start looking for a scope, nd I need to humbly petition for the Wisdom of the Crowd again.

First, a quick view of what we're working with both in weapon and available space.

    Requirements:
    1. Must be Quick Detach, completely toolless removl and reinstall when it's time to break the thing down and put it back in the briefcase.
    2. Must hold zero through repeated remove-reinstall cycles.
    3. Must be compact enough to fit into available space.
    4. Does NOT need to be "tactical," just outwardly look it--this project is a pure Range Toy, not meant for even Critter Gitter never mind any kind of serious work. We're trying to build something that looks like it belongs in a movie and still shoots well enough to be fun in matches, NOT anything we'd issue a real covert operative. (If a REAL Double-O commissioned a build from me I'd hand him an ASDW an an LPVO and call it a day.)
    5. As space is tight, something that can take some knocking aroun while still holding zero is a BIG plus.

Expected effective range is 100yd max--IIRC the 10/22 is designed as a 100yd-at-most gun though can be tuned for farther. What other data do we need before we can start spitballing suggestions and evaluating candidates? The lazy part of me is tempted to just get one off Pew Pew Tactical's 10/22 scopes list like a Simmons Truplex, slap it in an appropriately sized cantilever and call it a day, but I'm wondering if there isn't something to better fit the needs for my "everything for an entire range trip except the safety gear in one case" concept.

I MIGHT be able to rearrange the mags and slide the scope into the parts-&-tools tacklebox if that opens up options; that's already where the TRS25 mini-red dot lives.

Find Nikon with QD rings. You don't want to spend more than a Nikon on a 10/22, you probably don't want to buy less than a Nikon on a 10/22.

Figures that Nikon left the sector in Dec 2020. Mounts, if i can find one the right height I was thinking see if Aero has something QD, since they're "home team" and fighting our "let's try to ban everything we can all the way to a Mauser Red 9 as 'assault weapons'" HB1240.

Time to hit the EE, I guess... maybe time to get my ass moving and register over at Rimfire Central too.

Looks like I missed out on some pretty good glass. So a 3-9x50 BDC at about the $160 pricepoint...

Damn man, I'm sorry. I had thought I found the last place that still had a few in stock. It's crazy those Nikons get discontinued, while certainly not a Leupold Mark 4 or anything close to that, they were amazing budget glass that blew the hell out of Bushnell and the other $100 scopes. And for dropping on something like a 10/22 they were perfect.

Really clear glass with enough magnification that you just watch your groups appear as if by magic (when shooting suppressed).

Yes, you will need to think about the height with that rear sight.

Have you considered a scout mount? Either with a scout scope or a regular scope in an AR cantilever mount in reverse.

Todd, a reverse cantilever was the mental picture I first had. With the short length of rail, I was thinking one to clamp onto the rifle handguard, or just mount a low one on a 1/2" 1-lever 7-slot QD riser for fast takedown and reassembly.

If I'm measuring right, I need about a 9/16" clearance from top of the rail to bottom of the eyepiece. I'm assuming we don't want any of the iron's reticle intruding into the eyebox... and speaking of, a more forgiving eyebox might be helpful too.

Random thought: Do any of you guys shoot Appleseed, and if so would this thing be legal for that?

I’d expect most scopes will need to be mounted over the rear sight. I’d try and mount it about as low as possible if eye relief allows it to be in front.

The Leupold fixed 2.5x has a pretty generous eye relief, the Trijicon TR-21 has a ton of you can find a used one.

I'll see if I can get some selfies looking through the sights to show what we're working with, if that helps; I'm still at "Pistol Experience Only" and my gal is practically a complete firearm virgin, so something even a complete idiot can get the hang of quick is a bonus.
