I have never used this app so I'm generalizing. The typical Android app wants all sorts of things unrelated to its function. Does this one not?
How many forums are you frequenting that you need a unified interface to the lot?
When I first downloaded Tapatalk, it was 25-30. Always been on iOS, so zero idea on Android versions.
Over the years, some upgraded forum software and said the hell with it. Others made a statement doing it… their forum, their rules. Others… I just got bored or didn’t own the product anymore. The bigger forums I frequent (M4C, PF) are still here.
Paid for the no ads version, which made it less of a headache to navigate. But with this current drop, I might be at 9 or so.
Reading/scanning forums via a Tapatalk is so much easier. There are some good ones I don't bother with because they don't allow Tapatalk. (65grendel for one)
Permissions are not an issue, on Android you can allow or disallow any particular permission and tapatalk doesn't ask for much.
I sure hope m4c does not disable tapatalk access
I said the hell with it and tried that Fora app…
So, permissions are a huge concern, yet I select a forum, put my email in… click the link they send and can log into every forum associated with them?
Navigation SUCKS! The app revolves around all of their forums, and finding the one you want to get to. No list of categories, but searching “gun” gave me the list of most of the ones I go to (only other one was a truck forum). If you log into a forum, it is in a list… and cannot remove it. Getting to that list isn’t intuitive. And the app just runs the forum in a browser. Literally, that’s it. People can hate Tapatalk, but they went thru the years of messing around with different designs to get somewhere that was somewhat usable. Fora… far from that point. App will need a few major overhauls to get to a place where it is worth the effort.
If you want to stop ads, seems like you’ll have to pay for each forum you go to. Guess that helps forums out. Or sends money back into the pool.
As I logged out of forums, I did comment on threads related to this with what I knew at that time. One forum, the admin could only copy and paste the info given in that email. When questioned, “that’s all I can speak on it.”
Another, I pointed out Vertical Scope and how I’m sure that the Canadian company isn’t worried about about user security. One member implied that the comment had no basis… which, maybe it did but it was a fair statement about a company based where both speech and firearms aren’t held as high as the US. Then a mod copied the same info given in email, said that they probably worry about security the same as most forum users… but was happy that scammer “backdoor” was closing. And as the thread was locked, admin added that passwords haven’t changed.
Seems that the rollout had some instructions given to VS forum staff in how to handle questions.

Really don't know where you're getting that idea from.
Tapatalk only asks for permissions related to its use. I just took a look.
Any Android in the last 10 years requires you to approve all permissions and allows you to individually disable.
Which may or may not break functionality in the app. Ex: it's hard to store what articles you've seen or not without having access to local storage. Just like your browser.
Same for allowing access to play music or video. You can disable it and it will no longer allow the playback of video in the app.
The only one I question is wanting to access contacts, which is uses to send email from within the app, but is not required to use the app.
6-7 regularly, more than that infrequently. How many forums are you frequenting that you need a unified interface to the lot?
You bypass crazy formatting, different themes and skins. It's just like using your mailer with no tiny HTML buttons to click to go to the next article or the last few article, etc. Just scroll.
It's not perfect, but pretty solid.
Tapatalk gives you the option of a unified login where they keep track of your logins for you. But it's not required to use it.
In fact, it works without logging in at all unless the forums require it.
I've also noticed that one of the first things VerticalScope does to a forum is turn it into an ads section for the same group of advertisers. Take a look at Gunhub; what was once the M4C of its day and a bastion of the Internet gun crowd's founding fathers and famous gunwriters is now nothing more than a private billboard for Camera Land. 1911Forum seems to be heading that way too.

Welp, now I'm concerned the new mystery owner of m4c may be verticalscope.
Hopefully that is not the case as VS has ruined a bunch of really good forums (pirate4x4) and has a pretty bad CS track record. (Many forums become subscription, etc)
Also, it's been reported that VS is owned by the Toronto Star, which is totally anti-firearm.
Please tell me m4c is not headed down that path.!
