I’ve had mostly good care at the Portland VA. My primary care is good and I’ve had nurses from primary care call me after surgery to see how I was doing.

Was disappointed to read this. I have known 3 Marines that were struck down with ALS and 1 with terminal cancer. IME(their) experience the VA did a great job with "terminal/end of life care". I've given the VA a pass on the failings I have experienced because they took good care of my friends at the end.Originally Posted by flenna

I have an appointment today to get my VA issued "ears" reconfigured. The hearing aids I have (due to gunfire, explosions and jet engines) are horrible. However, much like yourself, the VA rated me at ZERO percent and said the reason I have hearing loss / damage is because of my service.

Board policy mandates I state that I shoot for BCM. I have also done work for 200 or so manufacturers within the firearm community. I am prior service, a full time LEO, firearm instructor, armorer, TL, martial arts instructor, and all around good guy.
I also shoot and write for various publications. Let me know if you know cool secrets or have toys worthy of an article...

There are plenty of good people I’ve seen in the VA system. The system doesn’t have the culture or incentive to get rid of the terrible ones.

Why would anyone that retired from the MIL not use TriCare and use the VA? I would not even think of going to the VA for any reason at all, none what so ever.
In no way do I make any money from anyone related to the firearms industry.

Because I'm 62 and have to transition off of TriCare and on to something else at 65.
Thought I would give the VA a try.
The quality of your care is directly related to who's providing the care. When individuals become more important than the system, it's time for them to go.

Tricare’s not spotless either. In classic insurance fashion, they’ve made an art of claiming its not their turn to pay the bill until all parties are so tired of seeing the bill get kicked back that someone: a) writes it off b) pays out of pocket c) informs Tricare that they’ve retained an attorney
Its why so many places, particularly pharmacies, don’t accept Tricare.
The VA does decent for primary care, though it seems to vary wildly from city to city, and provider to provider. They’ve been known to hire, and retain, nurses that have no clue how to measure blood pressure properly, but they also might have a decent doc on the same team. Or an idiot doc and decent nurse. The more urgent or complex the problem is, the less likely I would be to recommend them.
