    H 4198

I have 8 pounds of IMR 4198. Best application is for cartridges that I don't have (like 45/70). But, i do have a few cartridges that should work. What do you guys suggest for application in the following cartridges:

    1. 223
    2. 30/30 (30 remington model 8)
    3. 6br
    4. 30 carbine
    5. 6.5 swede

Right now, I believe that 223 with 55gr bullets is probably the best use.

Pick the one you shoot the most with load data. Wouldn't be my first choice for 556, but will certainly work. I have a few pounds of it and have used it for some 762 loads in the past.

For 55's I'd probably start at 19gr and work my way up until I started seeing pressure signs.

ETA: The original suggested start value was derived from Quickload, I see on the Hodgdon website their max published is only 20.4 so I'd probably start lower. Quickload can pretty accurately tell you how much you can go over published load data, but that isn't for the inexperienced. So I amended my number above for a safety factor.

I do have a 7.62x39. But I am not configured to reload for it.

Go over to Hodgdon's reloading data center and choose your cartridge. Then jump down to the list of powders and select IMR 4198. It should come up with some loads.

If IMR 4198 is not listed under the chosen cartridge, there are no loads with that powder.

Yes. I have definitely used that website. My initial impression based off Hogdon and other people's experience is that imr4198 is useful under these circumstances in 556:

    1. 55gr or lighter
    2. 20" barrel

Barrel length won't be a factor, it will only affect velocity.

As far as bullet weight, it really depends on what your goal is, but will work fine for 55 FMJ loads. You could use it for heavier bullets but if load density or velocity is a concern, you may not get the results that you are looking for.

Some 20" or greater barrels will not cycle using it. Port pressure is too low to run some guns.

I may have had that backwards.16" is preferred over 20". I read that recommendation over a year ago.

Any decent .223 load will run in any decent gas system. I'd whip up a blaster 55 or 62 gr load an burn this stuff up.

    Markm,

That is my objective. To generate as much range ammo for my ammunition hungry boys. 52gr or 55gr bulk bullets, about 20gr of powder, and fun to be had!!
