    So while search and rescue has been called off, glad to learn recovery efforts are still underway.

    My guess. Assuming the ship was moving and trying to evade being boarding it would be under full power. Being they went in the water right next to the ship it would seem possible that as they reached the stern they could have been sucked into the prop and killed or severely maimed making it impossible to attempt self rescue.
