"California Marine unit loses M110 sniper rifle"

Oops. I'm sure the USMC isn't alone in all this. The USAF is so paranoid about firearms that the squadron commander might get fired over something like this.

"Battalion Landing Team 1/5, the ground combat element of the 15th Marine Expeditionary Unit, reported an M110 semi-automatic sniper system unaccounted for “following a Joint Light Tactical Vehicle movement” at Camp Pendleton, California, Marine spokesman Capt. Brian Tuthill told Marine Corps Times in an emailed statement Thursday.

Between 2010 and 2019, 204 Marine firearms were lost or stolen, and only 14 were later recovered, a 2021 Associated Press investigation found.

In January 2023, the North Carolina-based 3rd Battalion, 6th Marines, lost one M18 service pistol and two pistol magazines — a little more than three years after two rifles went missing from the same unit."

We left a shotgun leaning up against a tree at a SWAT callout. The nice lady found it a few days later and brought it back to headquarters. Sheriff was not happy about that one. SWAT commander was not happy we put him in a pickle.

When my wife was a property manager, female FDA agent left her Glock on the counter of a public bathroom. They shared the building with a day care. Thankfully an adult employee of the day care came across it first.

California Marine should have reported the M110 abandoned in Astan.

Years ago I was working off duty (in uniform) security at a festival downtown. Our shift commander said he needed to take a dump so he headed about a 1/4 mile away to the public bathrooms at the marina. A while later he comes back and I noticed his duty gun was not in its holster. I pointed it out and, I tell you what, I’ve never seen a fat guy run so fast. Fortunately it was still sitting on the toilet tank where he left it.

A lot of people leave guns in rental cars, which is really kinda scary.

I've never lost a weapon but, I've been in a unit where a weapon was lost and you really don't want to do that. Turned out someone attempted to steal it and thought better of it.
Had some knucklehead decide to bring a pistol home from Iraq, he got busted actually told him to retire or he would be Courts Martalled. Opened up a wind sensor on an Abrams Tank and a Makarov fell out. That Tank had been in the States 5 years and went through a Re Set.

That Makarov would have fallen right into my collection! Doubt anyone would be looking for it 5 years later.

Kinda sorta knew a guy in the early 90's who had been in the 24th ID during Desert Storm. He claimed they had gotten an M16A2 from a U.S. vehicle that had been destroyed (which I found rather ghoulish) as well as an AK from elsewhere. Said they broke them down and put them inside an Abrams barrel, which were plugged for the ship-ride home. When they got back they removed the plug and the stash was taken out and squirreled away by a couple Joes.
