    One More AK Question

Are any of you guys running a red dot on your AK’s upper rail or gas tube rail (Ultimak)? I’m not a big fan of the side rail mounting options for the Zastava M70 and I’m worried about the heat. Of course everything I’ve read says as long as you’re running a T1 no worries. Well I don’t run T1s…….I run MROs. The MRO isn’t trash but it’s not a T1. If it’s going to seriously diminish the life of my optic I’ll go another route.

I run PA or HS. No worries. MRO should be fine.

Got an ultimak on my polish underfolder. The trijicon reflex ACOG has no issues with the mount.

MRO is still Trijicon, should be fine. Also looks like there is a high mount which should alleviate any concerns with an Ultimak mount since you aren't gonna get a co witness anyway.

Yep…..the lower 1/3 co-witness mount IS pretty tall. Good point. I was just afraid it would act like a heat sink. Sometimes I think if I didn’t have something to fret about I’d wither and die!

I don’t know why the MRO gets so much hate. I love them. I don’t think anything else is comparable in that price point (easily found under $400). But I’m heavily biased.

You're not a fan of side rail mounting in general or you're not a fan of the options that you've seen? If it's the latter, then check out the Yugo optic mounts by AK Master Mount (that's the brand name). They're extremely well made and work great.

My experience with other side rail mounts on other AKM platforms was that the optic ended up sitting a bit too high for my liking. Certainly shootable but I really like my cheek down on the stock. So I was just avoiding them in general. If anyone made a railed top cover for the M70 that didn’t totally suck I’d be all over it.

You might have to learn to shoot an AK (not a shot but if you aren't used to them), if you are coming from a M4 with low profile optics there is a learning curve. There is a reason the Russian military developed side mounts and it isn't because they didn't test everything else under the sun.

If you can make an Ultimak work then you are good, but I find them to be just a little too forward mounted for my tastes. There is also a mount that replaces the rear v notch sight that you might want to consider.

It’s a valid point. I have very little real time working behind an AK. Feels very foreign (no pun intended) to me right now.

I ordered an Ultimak gas rail and one of the M.I. biased forward side rails specifically for the MRO. So it should sit as low to the receiver as possible. Just gonna have to try some shit out and decide.

    Thanks fellas.

Don't feel alone, I had to "learn" AKs too. Awkward optics, even irons aren't ideal, strange / different trigger, typically a short LOP unless you have a NATO length stock, rock and lock mags require some time if they are new to you and a host of other differences.

Took me more than a little bit before I could effectively shoot an AK pattern rifle as well as my others.
