I have a chrome plated P7 done by Fords and a chrome plated Jericho police trade in that looks like it has had the shit shot out of it. I use a hybrid holster for the P7 and the finish is still perfect. The Jericho finish is not perfect but other than cosmetic blemishes it is still 100% functional. Chrome plating holds up well over the long term.

Wright Armory does NT7 and NT7+ (NP3 and NP3+ replacement).

That’s impressive but how slick is NT7? I have handled handguns that were finished with NP3 that were slippery and the slide was difficult to rack because of it.

Thanks for posting this, I was unaware. It would be interesting to hear reports for those that have used this. I might go with this instead of the DLC.

Reading through their website it looks like a very similar product, electroless nickel with embedded teflon which is exactly what NP3 was. Cool that somebody is offering a finish like that to the retail market again.

I've never done a gun in it, so I can't say, but I would think it would be just as slick as NP3, since it is just an improved version of it. If I did do one though, it would be internals only.

Beretta has a coating on some of their firearms called "Aqua Tech Shield". Haven't heard very much about it.

"A hybrid organic-inorganic coating, with a high content of Nano Ceramics, high density and high level of reticulation."

What's the lubricity rating of hard chrome compared to regular electroless nickel and electroless nickel impregnated with teflon like NP3/NT7? Obviously the nickel/teflon will be the slickest, but what about the other two?

I was reading somewhere on one of these plating company websites that their finish applied to stainless steel would eliminate the problem of galling "which is a common problem with stainless steel" which I'm not so sure about that either. I've got a few stainless semi auto pistols that seem to be plenty slick without any galling. Maybe it's a problem in other applications besides firearms. Thoughts?

IIRC, stainless galling has more to do with the OEM material selection. Making the slide and frame out of the same stainless alloy will lead to problems.

I don't have the answer but at some point you have to worry about grip. I've done some sweaty summers at the range and the only thing worse than smooth plastic frames are stainless steel autos which are very popular in humid environments as carry guns (due to rust factors) but can get slippery with enough handling.

I think it was a Kimber compact in stainless that started working against me. Slipping off the slide stop, missing the magazine release and even having to double sling shot the slide when it didn't work the first time. Now this was pretty extreme, I think it was august and I was pouring sweat into my shooting glasses so under more normal conditions it might not be a problem.

But it was a consideration when I chose hard chrome over a NP3 finish for my P7.
