I like how Riech claims that the historically unemployed can be easily and quickly trained to do the the skilled trades jobs in question. Last I checked, a proper 4 year apprenticeship takes 4 years. I've managed skilled trades for quite a few years, and I know many of these jobs just can't be learned quickly. It takes classwork, practice, and lots of OJT.

Sure they may be able to dig a ditch, but I certainly would not want them operating industrial equipment (cranes, loaders, dozers, graders, etc), welding, doing ironwork, doing electrical work, running pipes, doing HVAC work, laying rebar and pouring concrete road beds, or anything else that has to be done right and meet safety codes.

The construction industry in this country, especially homebuilding has already been decimated by cheap illegal labor. But part of the reason for that is the illegals show up on the job site every day like clockwork asking for work. Sooner or later, someone lets them pick up a shovel and start working, and the boss figures out a way to make the employment paperwork look right.

In a neighborhood near mine, improperly trained bricklayers ended up causing mold to grow on a bunch of new houses due to insufficient vapor barriers or insufficient gaps between the brick and the exterior chipboard. The builder had to tear off all the brick, replace the moldy chipboard and do it all over.

Now, go ahead ask anyone if historically unemployed urban American citizens show up at the job site every day asking for work. Guess what answer you'll get?

The government just doesn't get that fact that many who don't work regularly, simply don't WANT to work regularly. And if you hire them, they will be fired quickly for showing up late, not working hard, or simply not showing up at all.

My wife signed on with the DC Government a couple years back to take a couple of their high school "intern" students on board during the Summer break. One of the students showed up with both hers and her friend's attendance cards and expected my wife to sign them even though neither student had done one minute's worth of work. When my wife refused, the girl threw a temper tantrum.

My wife hasn't signed up for DC public school "interns" since.

The unions will interfere before to many construction workers get the shaft and to be honest I am not one bit affraid of a riot.
For that type of situation to resort into a riot is idiotic and foolish, idiots and fools usually get what they deserve.
The D's no longer really count on the Trade unions for their support. They have the SEIU for its money and only are interested in the trade unions for photo-ops when they visit certain areas.

In St Louis inner city schools tactical crack high shooting is learned by the 7th grade...remember Rev Al Sharpton came to St Louis to participate in a 'Minority Contractor Sit-In' back in late nineties. They all sat in the middle of Interstate 70 in 90 degree heat with humidity in the 80's for hours protesting the awarding of highway construction jobs to companies with all the equipment skilled workers plans ready to go. Protesting the contract not being given to three guys with a dump truck two shovels and a pick-axe.
The city and county compromised...and I witnessed the sub-standard work in progress one day.
As a matter of fact ...
A big buckle in the road outside of Mid-Coast Aviation... I guess it was embarrasing landing V.I.P's putting them in a limo to pull out and nearly get the limo frame hung. I'm on my way to work (passed this spot everyday 4 times) I am passing the 'Matterhorn' as it was called, and there is dump track full of steaming asphalt with 8 guys with pick axes and shovels doing they thing...I go home for lunch of course routed around the now missing 'Matterhorn' and I am amazed there are about 40 guys with lunch bags in addition to our original guys with shovels and picks and had removed the many layers of asphalt which was loaded into a different truck. The steaming truck of asphalt was still there but sat immersed in a casted shadow, but I wondered what was with all the guys-trainees ? Hell I dunno, I go home let the dogs out bring in the mail and usually stayed about 10 minutes as I am driving back past the work area I realized what the 40 guys were for/doing ...the asphalt had been dumped and spread into the hole, industrious group. All in 20minutes and I shit you not...all 40+ guys were all jumping up and down on the freshly poured asphalt which was several hundred pounds of 'hot' too much also driving the trucks back and forth over the less than 'hot' in moronic attempt to level it out. I am sure the work passed inspection.
The 'Matterhorn' became an asphalt dune spitting loose asphalt when it was driven over and was bumpier than the 'Matterhorn', which I guess was more explanation for limo drivers.
A week later on the way to work I see three guys a backhoe, steamroller and dump truck with hot asphalt in it examining the now much deteriorated 'asphalt dune' ...by noon there was a flat spot and no evidence anyone had been there except for the 40 or so lunch bags the wind had blown about. Both crews got paid but which got the job done. True Story...

You have erred, sir. You must report to the re-education camp immediately.

Any assertion that the problems in our nation are not caused by a fundamental lack of opportunity but are, rather, the result of a fundamental lack of good judgment cannot be tolerated.

...which should demonstrate quite clearly what Obama's "stimulus" package actually is...nothing but a trillion dollars worth of liberal pet projects and pork...none of which will cause economic growth.

There is a bunch of money for birth control in the "stimulus" package too...as if the real problem in America is an undersupply of free birth control.

The thing that gets me is that misguided welfare/social programs have CAUSED a lot of the current issues. The urban poor used to have marriage and employment rates similar to the middle class. Though they made less money, they had relatively stable families and worked for a living.

Since the increase in welfare benefits in the 60's, the government has created a permanent welfare class that is dependent on the government and does not work. Marriage is virtually non-existent because you can't get welfare if you're married. And this results in young men without fathers to discipline them dropping out of school and getting into all kinds of legal trouble.

So the solution to this abject failure is - get ready - MORE welfare and social spending!

When Obama and the Democratic Congress is done, 50% of the country will pay no Federal taxes due to the additional tax credits. That means they will have a permanent majority that will always vote to soak the "rich".

All those union, white construction workers who voted for Obama must feel great about their pick now I'm sure

I am neither white, or a construction worker, but this still agitates me because its un-American and flat out wrong. What's next? No aid for white farmers. That would make us Zimbabwe. Since when is it okay to dish out economic aid based upon race?

This is not the road we should be going down.
