Sorry I'm a bit slow on the draw here, but I didn't spot this earlier.
The E46 M3 is actually my second M car, with the first having been an E34 M5 (3.8 liter). Oddly enough, the cost of operation for this machine is quite reasonable -- though I concede that my standard of reasonability may differ slightly from that of the typical Chevrolet owner.
Aside from consumables and scheduled services (which I always have done at the local dealership), I've had almost no out-of-pocket expenses whatsoever. There are a couple of things to watch for in this model, but most -- if not all -- were corrected as the production line progressed, or were covered under warranty. The day-to-day costs associated with running the M3 are really no higher than they would be for a normal 3 series BMW. Of course, I can go through a set of new tires and brakes in three track days, but that is to be expected. It's a bit of a win-win, actually, in that you get the speed of a Porsche for the upkeep cost of a VW.
I've been very pleased with the car, though I am in stark terror of bringing it to US shores. I've become so "velocitized" that it is going to be excruciating to keep it within some semblance of US speed limits. That may sound like an attempt at humor, but I'm actually being quite serious. This car responds like a surgical instrument once you get it above 120 mph or so, and not surprisingly, I tend to spend a lot of time there.
