    Failure,
I agree with what you're saying about not having time to dick around with the light. I'm just putting forward an option that wasn't mentioned. A search situation (for say an LEO) would give you the 5-10 seconds or so that it takes to transition the pocket/backup light in the manner I'm describing.

Thanks for the correction on the name of the technique. I do prefer this hold actually. I've never had to use it outside of a class, but it feels good, provides enough light to ID a target, and is quick to put in place.

    1. More trauma per shot.
    2. Less penetration through walls.
    3. More desirable in court case than an SBR MP5 or AK47
    4. Less of loss if stolen from house than an NFA weapon (MP5 clone) or AK which cost $900.00 verses a $300.00 shotgun.
    5. Easier MOA for wife.

I hope you are not serious about the shotty doing nothing better for home defense than a carbine.

So, back on topic a little....
I'll give you that. But those are still pretty weak arguments when faced with the precision, lethality, and follow up capability that an M4 provides.

As far as a back up light, I've got an x300 on my sig, but no 2nd light on my carbine just yet. However I am seriously looking into the ARMS ring of fire!

    Speaking of odd lighting solutions....

Why not a head mounted light? Has the ability to ID without aiming gun, allows normal daylight operation of long gun...

Anyone make a Byte pressure switch? LOL

I agree. I think probably the best way to use a carbine version of the Harries style is to have a VFG mounted as far forward as possible. Then you can put the inside of your wrist against the VFG and press back. It allows for decent control (on a 5.56, anyway) and keeps the beam unhindered by the weapon.

A head mounted light would suck when the weapon is mounted to the shoulder. There again you'd have the weapon out in front of the light which would shilouette part of your anatomy and would block a lot of the beam's useful light.

    John_Wayne777,

Thanks for reminding me of the obvious, which I needed. I feel stupid now.

I don't mean to dog-pile you on this one, just a quick observation-

There are times that a head-mounted light is a really nice thing to have, unfortunately, a gunfight or potential gunfight is not one of them.

My point is not that you are wrong, just that there is a certain application area for the item.

    F2S,

I was typing faster than my brain could keep up.

j/k kidding about feeling stupid (didn't make it sound like I was offended), you'll find that I'm thick skinned and can make fun of myself often.

As of recent, i started running an surefire M900 with an IR filter and a scoutlight mounted on the side rail. If the scout light goes down all i have to do is flip the IR cover off the 900 and go to town. In extremely dark situations i guess the LEDs on the 900 could provide you with an additional backup. Of course my preferred method would be with NVG's and hit the perp with the IR beam before he even knows your there. Just my opinion though and what works best for me.
