    Mounting Question

OK, I just ordered a Remington 700 SPS tactical for my wife. At the same time I ordered a Leupold - LR/T M1 4.5-14x50 Mildot. This is a little different set up then we have had in the past and am a little confused about the mounting of the glass.

Now I bought this stuff from Sniper Country PX after speaking with Scott for a while. We talked about a mount for the glass, but I had not given it much thought. He recommended a setup that I cant remember the name of which had a Picatinny rail that mounts on the gun and the rings mount to the rail. Well, this setup was over 200 bucks and seems a bit steep.

So, is there a better setup for mounting to the 700 that is going to hold it tight but not cost me an arm and a leg?

Thank you guys for your help in advance.

Hi - similar scenario. SPS Tactical in .308. I went with Ken Farrell g-force pic rail base and Burris Xtreme tactical rings in med height. Received both from Big River Tactical. Less than 1 week turn-around and total was ~$140 shipped.

The Med ring height with the Farrell base left 0.5" between the bottom of the Objective bell and the top of the barrel (3x9 40mm objective). I debated on the difference between the low and med height rings (1/4" difference) - Med gave me a reasonable cheek weld, although the Low rings would have also worked. I'm staying with the Med to accomodate a larger objective lens for a longer range scope if I ever take this set-up out West (don't forsee a shot longer than 300 yds here on the East coast).

Both rings and base are very sturdy - I like the additional recoil lug on the base and it had enough slots to allow for the rings and scope to position correctly for eye relief (~ 3.5" on this scope).

I'll try to take a few pictures if that would help out.

    Cheers,
    Pk

    I'm using a 20MOA Badger base and Badger medium 30mm rings. I have a Leupold 3.5-10x Mk4 scope.

Actually I just sprayed my mount and rings with FDE Norrells moly resin the morning and the Butler Creek caps with Duracoat Magpul FDE.

This is two pics of it before painting the scope caps and rings/mount.
The barrel, receiver, bolt and suppressor are sprayed with FDE Norrells and the stock, scope and bipod are with Duracoat tactical dark earth. The nomex suppressor cover is from www.riflesonly.com

Thanks for the replies guys. I have been looking at both of those options, but I do have a couple of questions....

Pk14...does that setup seem to be holding pretty well? I know it takes a jarring in .308, so I just want to make sure this will hold up good.

Second, is medium height rings going to be tall enough for a 50 mm objective? I dont really want to go with tall rings if I dont have to.

ETA: Also, Gotm4....where did you get your setup from? it is a little out of my price range on the site I was looking at, but am not counting it out.

I like the Burris rings for two reasons - there is a lot of surface area holding the scope and clamping area on the pic rail. Torqued to spec, there has been no movement of zero POA / POI after 65 rounds of 168gr Hornaday AMAX.

Are they overkill for the rifle / round? No idea. 3 screws per ring side versus 2 on other set-ups is something I don't have experience with and would defer to others that have done some shoot-offs. The only down side I can see from the Burris rings are that they allow less fore/aft adjustment of the scope once you've located the rings on the pic base. The Farrell base allowed for enough rail slots to accomodate the rings and scope eye relief I was looking for (I'll snap a few pictures on Monday evening).

The Med rings should allow for enough clearance between the scope and barrel - I was figuring on a 50mm Objective option in the future. (For the near term, I was looking to get back at a few of the relatives of the deer that took out my car for 2 months and an inexpensive 3 x 9 40 Nikon Team Primos is answering the mail.) Looking at Robb's pictures, the forward extension of the pic rail and the slope of the scope bell appear to be an area to watch for interference as much as the actual diameter of the objective. On the Farrell base, there is not as much forward extension beyond the forward ring mounting position, so the limitation on ring height was just the objective lens diameter to barrel gap. You should still have ~ 0.27" of clearance with a 50mm lens.

    Cheers,
    Pk

I bought it at work, I work in a gunstore. I see what Pk14 is talking about. If I later go with a 50mm Leupold or Nightforce scope (I want a 5-22x) I would likely have to shorten the front edge of my Badger base. This easily done now that I have access to two milling machines.

Here's what my beast looks like after the Duracoat on the scope caps and the FDE Norrells on the rings and base.

I'll say this you've got a good eye for detail. Wish my 700 looked that good.

    D -

Here are a couple of pictures - there's enough adjustment fore and aft with the Burris rings and the Farrell base to handle a fairly wide range of scope / shooter pairings. Hope that helps.

Thanks for the pics Pk. You sure have that rear ring mounted as far back as possible huh?

I believe I am going to go with this setup and save a little money from my initial thoughts.

I appreciate your help on this one.

libertyoptics.com has the seekins bases as well as the Warne. and they also stock the seekins rings. it'll run you about $200, but you won't be sorry.

most other quality setups will be over $200. gotm4's setup retails for over $300 (150 for the mount and 170 for the rings).

personally, i run the badger base and the mk4 rings on my 700p. but since i just installed an AICS stock (which needs higher rings), i might just try the ADM Recon-S scope mont on my badger rail.

    hope this helps
