    7x46 and 6.5x47

    DocGKR,

I was looking at your stickied post on the 7x46 and saw the 6.5 mm projectiled load pictured beside it.

Due to the added length of running that very long bullet it looks like it would be a near drop in replacement into a 7.62x51 chambered weapon. Is that the case or is is just optical trick of the photo?

If it would be a relatively easy switch would the 6.5x47 offer a AR and GPMG double use round? Or does it not offer enough added terminal performance to replace the 5.56 or not enough barrier penetration to replace the .308 in the GPMGs?

6.5x47 was originally designed primarily for European 300m target competition using bolt guns. Like .260 Rem and 6.5 Creedmore, 6.5x47 mm Lapua fits into the AR10/SR25 type rifles. I think 6.5Creedmore or .260 Rem are probably better options for U.S. based semi-auto shooters, but all three work similarly. Read Zak Smith's superb article for more information: http://demigodllc.com/articles/6.5-s...creedmoor/?p=1
