One of the dumbest things I ever saw at a gun store was stenciled on the door. "Absolutely no loaded firearms in store, exception is law enforcement."

This just struck me odd, the place that wants to sell you a firearm and wants your to have the right to carry anywhere would like for you to disarm before entering their store.

I did not enter the store because of this sign and I had my gun on me. I respected their wishes and they surely lost a sale from me.

I could certainly understand a sign that says "If you present a firearm without first notifying the staff, be prepared to be drawn and possibly fired upon!"

I know it is to keep the nut jobs from walking in with their trade in gun locked and loaded, but it just didn't sit well with me.

I try not to go anywhere that disarms me.

A lot of the larger stores have this policy. Cabelas doesn't allow it, though they won't bug you about concealed weapons usually. Of course, employees, including guys at the gun counter and loss prevention, are strictly forbidden from carrying openly or concealed as well.

My Cabela's allows open and concealed carry as permitted by state law. Sounds like your Cabela's store owner is anti-gun.

I can see why a policy like that exists. Ever work behind a counter and the customer whips out his piece to show you? Yeah...that happens a lot.

Cabelas here in Az allows open carry. They just ask at the door if you plan on removing the gun from the holster (trade in, holster buying, etc..) at which point they do the clearing procedure.

Yes. I worked at Cabelas in the past. I had a guy come to get fitted for a new holster. He whipped out his loaded piece, pointed it at me WITH HIS FINGER ON THE TRIGGER, before putting it down the counter, still pointing where I had been a split second earlier. A bit of a pucker factor to say the least. I told him to be careful please, and he was just like, "Oh, don't worry about it, I know what I'm doing."

My response would be along the lines of "Clearly sir, you don't have any idea what you are doing. If you point a loaded pistol at me again I'll have to assume that you intend to do harm to me and I will be forced to take appropriate action." When you intentionally violate 3 out of 4 of the basic rules for firearm safety you have just put someone in danger of losing their life.

Is it so difficult to carry a different piece that day and put the one you want to fit for a holster in its factory box without a mag and the slide locked back? Anytime one of my pistols go in for work at a smith this is how I do it.

I'm sure you'd chew his ass, AFTER you carefully unloaded his weapon and had the mag in your hands?

I walked into a good-ol'-boys lgs today, and one of the old timers behind the counter was showing off some shotguns to a couple and they asked what ammo is best for self defense. He said that his personal shotgun is loaded with '4 double ought buck for inside the house, and if they get away the next 2 are slugs for blowing holes in the gas tank followed by a flare to light up the gas trail.'
