I love shooting alobe, on private property. It gives me a chance to focus and improve. I make more progress alone, but I only have one friend near my level, and he's out if town. I enjoy shooting with the fiance, but I spend most of my time training her when we go.

For the op, not a store, but at a friends shoot, a bunch of people showed, a lot of dirt shooting and a slide fire stock with sagging echo pants showed up. There were 3 of us attempting real shooting. I left shortly after getting flagged by slide fire's bau, boo, whatever.

Heard the next day someone took a ricochet and cops were called after large tanerite targets were set off. So basically a bunch of gun-shop hangouts got together it seems.

Me: So what are you carrying?"
    OF: What?"
Me: "What you carrying on ya?"
OF: one of them NAA .22 revolvers.
Me: What was that about carrying the biggest and baddest round you can?"
And that was the end of that conversation.
Now THAT'S entertainment!! That is one hilarious story Kain!!

Some poser posing because it's the thing to do.

These days a lot of people can get informed and going to the range is actually first or second date activity now.

Plus most switched on people now just get a good FFL, buy online, and don't hang out too much. Or just shoot with buddies at a range. And not really intervene unless someone needs help or is flagging folks.

Me, personally, I won't shoot alone. Ever.
If local indoor range is too crowded, I don't shoot.

Really, I'd sooner see positive stories about more women and young people getting into shooting. I was lucky to get into it though most of my shooting was vocation related. It's a proud discipline and instead of ranking on jabronis; we should be stressing safety and positive attitudes. Strutting about arrogantly turns people off as does making people feel like if they shoot; they just signed up to be on a Marine fireteam.

We need more "this can be fun, but can also save your life"

Instead of expecting some Barbie to be capable of attacking a structure and taking point.

    Just my take.
True. But I can say from experience, just when I think I've heard it all...

I think there's a similar story on here and it's kind of hard to believe so I wasn't going to post it but, seeing as this thread needs to get back on track, here it is.

I was standing at the gun counter looking at lowers (ended up getting a Balios lite, hell ya) and happened to notice the guy next to me filling out his FFL paperwork was an off-duty cop when he took out his badge with his ID. A super friendly slim-shady-wannabe dude walked in and started looking at shotguns, kind of interrupting my interaction with the gun-shop employee and generally making himself the center of attention. After looking at a few cheap pump shotguns he asks "can I get one of these if I have a record?"

gun counter guy "uh, we can't sell to anyone with a prior felony."
slim-shady with a shit-eating grin "oh, damn, I'm on parole, well I'll just have to get my mom to come in and buy it"
gun counter guy "I believe that would be referred to as a straw purchase. Please leave and don't come back to my store."

Slim shady drops the smile, looks at the gun counter guy, me, and the off duty cop and senses that, perhaps, he's made some obscure faux pas and walks out confused. I think that dumbass actually had no idea he had been trying to commit another felony and violate his parole in front of an off duty officer and two witnesses. Luckily for him the LEO didn't seem to want to deal with it. That was literally the dumbest thing I've ever seen at a gun shop.

I saw a used no-frills Springfield GI 1911 and decided I liked it. The guy handed it to me and said it was ok to rack the slide and dry fire it. I noticed the slide was not smooth and the recoil spring was noticably loud. When I pointed this out, the guynsaid that's just the way Springfields are, even though the I TRP was just finger banging a minute before was in no way loud or rough to rack.
(Guy)"Well, it is a top quality model, so it's no real comparison."
(Me) "It's a Springfield, just like this one."
(Guy)"They utilize a different recoil system. That's for GI's, and the TRP is high end operator and professional grade so it's like glass smooth."
(Me)"Oh, really? I've gotta strip this GI model, ok?"
He said sure, and lo and behold, the was no guide rod present. Some more banter from the guy about reliability and serviceability, fewer parts is better for field conditions, etc.
(Guy)"See how wide that GI spring is? See the thick shelf-that wide spring and thick shelf eliminate the need for the guide rod."
(Me)"Sooo....what type of spring would I need? Never saw this mentioned anywhere before...you got one in stock?"
Dude couldn't produce one, but was happy to special order one if I needed it. He was starting to back pedal...then I offered to grab my own 1911 from the truck for a side by side comparison. With both models stripped I moved the guide rod and spring from my personal weapon to his GI.
(Guy)"Don't bother even trying to put the GI spring in yours, or your recoil assembly into the GI-won't work."
I promptly proved him wrong- I reassembled the GI with my parts and the GI cycled like a 1911 should. The guy tried spewing some crap about a normal spring and guide rod would be the same no matter what, but the GI spring wouldn't work with the guide rod. Again, I proved him wrong by putting the 'GI' spring and my guide rod into my personal weapon. Smooth cycling, surprisingly enough. Then I repeated this with the GI one last time-his spring, my rod. Another smooth cycling gun. At this point he was getting miffed...
(Guy)"Look, I'll knock 25 bucks off the price. Just be cool about it, ok?"
I thanked for the educational experience.

I agree with you for a slightly different reason. At our outdoor range I want a buddy watching my 6, my 9 and my 3 because I have witnessed a first time shooter with an AR that blasted the 2x4 in the little box she was shooting from. Her boyfriend/FLS thought it was funny and I thought it was incredibly unsafe and communicated their need to be safe or "ETS" from the range. (To coin a phrase from SeriousStudent) it wasn't the first time, so now I'm finalizing a deal with a friend who has the land that I and a couple of friends I trust will be able to shoot from. O e day I'll have my own piece of dirt, but until then if I can stay off public ranges I'll be more than happy. Geez I gotta stop taking these detours!

This is why they say "Stupid hurts". Is that an automatic 10 year sentence for mommy? Like you said, punk probably had no clue what kind of trouble he was setting himself and mommy up for.
Saw a similar thing here in New Mexi...but dude was translating the 4473 for his esposa. The shop guys pinged in on that real quick and asked why he was doing that.
"She just moved here and does not have her license or ID yet."
    "Moved here from where- Mexico?"
"Yeah, but does it even matter? I'm trying to get my wife a piece to protect herself. You can't tell me that's against the law!?"
"See this part with your name as the buyer, and this part about buying for yourself and notfor anyone else?"

Wonders if we need a thread called "Dumbest things overheard (or read) at M4C." I hang out here way more than my LGS.

The caliber doesn't really fascinate me and if I can't do it with a .357 then I kind of have the feeling that I need to get me a good rifle. Not saying that I wouldn't own a .44 if I was in an area that it made sense, but I don't........

This reminded me of the "common knowledge" BS I used to hear on my first tour in Fairbanks, AK back in 1983. I was 19 at the time and very inexperienced about guns. Wanted to buy something for critter deterrence while walking the several mile trail to a local fishing hotspot. I'm at the Eielson AFB Exchange gun counter talking with the clerk and several older guys jump in and rant how they always carry a .44 mag in the woods. Gun counter guy couldn't or wouldn't argue with them, so being a 'greenhorn', plunked down $275 for a 7 inch Redhawk. After trying to teach myself to shoot that thing AND noticing how all the "seasoned" guys at the range had problems hitting with much accuracy themselves, I did what I should have done in the first place...hit a tiny local bar way out in the boonies and asked the "real natives" what they carried. Consensus was a 30-30 cal or larger rifle or a 12 gauge. So I made a second trip to the BX and bought the Mossberg Alaskan Combo", a Mossy 500 with 18" and 28" barrels, adjustable chokes, pistol grip, and a sling. Best $159 I ever spent on a gun!

Having owned a 7 inch Redhawk, I have often wondered how many Alaskans have found an empty set of shredded clothes, perhaps some bone and hair and a bright shiny 7 inch Redhawk with only empties in the cylinder?
I could barely shoot the damned thing and after about twelve full power rounds I wondered why Elmer Keith even F'ing bothered.
That was seriously a bad choice in pistols for me.
