I plan on taking my first formal pistol/carbine course in October. My question is this, is it advisable to take a back up pistol in case my main one takes a dump on me?

Taking a backup weapon (preferably one that uses the same ammo, magazines, and carry gear) is a splendid idea for any training course you attend. Stuff has a bad habit of breaking or manifesting unusual problems during training.

Yes. Bring back ups of everything. If you don't need something, one of your classmates may.
