I suspect they did the NICS check after you left. Many places take your phone number when you do the 4473 with your LTC/CCW and then do one later.

Many, if not all, dealers have the customer fill out a 4473, but do not do a NICS check. It becomes a record for the dealer that the item was delivered to the customer and checks an imaginary box for the BAT folks.

A 4473 is filed with all the others as required by the ATF. A NICS check is not completed (as your stamp approval is your check) and no approval number is needed on the form.
