What is the use of a shotgun?

Back in 1987, a man with a mini 14 went on a shooting spree killing 4 civilians and wounding 14 more. The guy took hostages at a store and killed 2 of the responding officers. The guy later surrendered and was sentenced to death for all the murders. When I say it was a big deal in the late 80's i mean that kind of thing was not reported nationally as much as it is today.

I agree with you that both the shotgun and the rifle are useful tools to have. I carry both with me. The 870 gets loaded with two slugs and two buckshot. She rides up front with me. My rifle, by policy, rides in the trunk in its case.

My shotgun use consists of vermin control and pests. It is especially good at night for skunks. Back when I had a few head of cattle, I saw a skunk running around the pasture in daylight, and the cows were acting spooked. The skunk was probably rabid, judging by the way it acted. I used a 12 gauge with a Winchester Double XX magnum #4 shot, 1.5 oz. load...very efficient shotshell.

While shotguns are good don't count on any small arm having immediate incapacitation unless you hit the CNS.
