ACOG + irons + Mini red dot, too much?

I have a LMT defender, and i just put on a ACOG TA31. Im wondering what to do about Close quarters stuff when doing three gun and training. I was looking at the mini red dot sights, But is this way to many sights? and i should just stick to the ACOG and irons?

You can get a cover for the front lens and shoot both eyes open. That will help. It really comes down to a lot of practice though and understanding the limitations of the ACOG.

They do ok at close range (if you are standing still and looking at one target). When you have to move and or engage multiple targets is when you will really find out how painful the ACOG is.

An option for you is to get the DD offset mount (if you have a rail) and then mount a small red dot type optic at about the 1 position. Then you just roll the weapon over and pick up the dot for CQB distances.

I do have the DD 1 o clock rail for a light mount, I may try it with a Mini dot and see how i like it.

you could mount a Doctor optic ontop of the ACOG

That position is generally considered too high to be of much use.

Agreed- it is really high, and is acceptable where it is used simply because it is the only option, and is better than the alternative (no MRD).

It is a series if compromises though- the 1 oclock offset is a bit tougher for some unconventional positions while the higher profile of the piggyback exposes more of the shooter and makes close-range work a little harder due to the higher LOS over bore.

One more thing to keep in mind is that the T-1 is about 10,000X stronger than any of the DR-type MRDs, and a piggyback position makes the MRD more likely to encounter impact. Trijicon's new MRD seems to be much beefier, but I have no idea when it will hit the market.

Here is a way to mount a MINI red dot in conjunction with an ACOG. Pictured here is my TA-31 and an old Optima 2000 using a YHM 45 degree offset Rail. It is a simple solution and in my opinion requires the least amount of cant to see the MRD. I have a Daniels Defense off set mount as well and this puts the MRD closer than the DD mount.

The MRD was mounted on top of the ACOG at the request of CRANE. I also think it's too high but those boy's wanted it on top.
Full disclosure - I am an Engineering Supervisor at Trijicon, Inc.

Oh, I know exactly who requested it.

CRANE also thinks it is a good idea to NOT pin the gas block on the MK18 either.

This is the exact application that the TNVC MURLM (Multi Use Rail & Light Mount) was designed for. The MURLM mounts a mini red dot at a perfect 5 degrees off the site line. This allows you to pick up the dot with the most minimal cant of the weapon. Most guys that first get their hands on the MURLM end up way over-canting the weapon. In fact, some guys just shift their eye over and pick up the dot. Either way, you maintain your cheek weld.
