1911 Build

hello,

I am looking for suggestions on a 1911 build. First off, I'd like some direction on a lower receiver. I know of double star and some others. I am about to finish my M4 project and moving on to the next one. Not only would I like to hear opionions on pieces but guide me to vendors as well.

I guess this advice will only matter if you are MIL/LE but Brownells has special pricing for us fellows and the have about 8 diffrent frames to chose from. If you need help setting up you account just call there customer service and they will walk you through it. After you log into the site you will seet the dealer prices that you know pay.

I was leaning toward a commander. I am an LEO and wanted to carry off duty. any cons as opposed to going full frame? Thanks again for the help. Red.

Someone already beat me to it, but Caspian makes very good frames for the 1911. I've built a couple on their frames never had any issues with them at all. As far as "giving" anything up between a commander and government model, you lose 3/4" in slide and barrel length. It also shortens the recoil stroke and makes it more violent in terms of feeding the next round. People have noted reliability issues in commander length 1911's that may not occur in 5" government models. Don't quote me as an expert, I'm just repeating what I've heard and read elsewhere. In the meantime, here's some gun porn. This is one I built on a Caspian frame, enjoy.

Nothing wrong with a commander. I've always heard that going below 4.25" was tempting the reliability gods. Most semi-custom makers put out commander length pistols, so that should tell you something.

That said, all the barrel length does is reduce weight and lower velocity. The frame is what's going to print. You might want to think about a bobtail grip, no matter what barrel length you choose.

I would go to 10-8performance, and read Hilton Yams articles on duty 1911's. Lot of good info to be found.

Otherwise I will pass on what I've learned ina few Vickers classes...

He believes you should start on a complete gun, in working order(reliable). This will keep you from having to chase problems that maybe a result of a bad frame or slide, like dimensional issues. You can drive yourself crazy looking for the issue, and you'd never know it.

He also believes Colts are some of the best guns to build on.

Anything other then a 5", single stack, .45 is a compromise, and is inheritently unreliable.
