    Mounting a Light

So I am beginning to locate parts for my first AR. It's going to be a HD rifle, so I want to get a light on it right away. I have a Surefire G2 just for the job and I'm intending on getting Magpul's MOE handguards and putting a rail at 3 o'clock to mount it (I'm a lefty)... so my question is, what is a good, yet economical way of putting the light on the mount? Would a 1" scope ring work?

I don't want something on there I can't depend on, but I don't have gobs of money running over to get a FF rail and a super duper best ever flash light mount...

That said, if the MOE handguards with a rail segment and an affordable mount won't work, I'll get what will work... Help me out guys!

VLTOR makes a nice inexpensive mounting option for the Surefire G2. I have them on my rifles and I'm quite pleased with the service they've offered me. A little dab of lock-tite on the threads of the thumbscrew will keep it in place.

Thankfully you don't need to spend hundreds of dollars to get an effective light mount. Midwest Indistries makes a nice mounting option that fits in the triangular hole of the front sight base that you can mount an X300 or something like a G2 in a VLTOR mount to. It's very effective. I have one on my Colt 6920.

That might be a better option for you than attaching a section of rail to the MOE handguard. It will depend on how you like to run your rifle.

SURFIRE makes a nice mount that has a flip up release so you can take the light off and use it if necessary and the mount stays on the rail, It also adjust to different size lights. It cost around 29.00.

The Viking Tactics Light Mount is a very good mount and a great value. I have several and have never had a problem with them.

I didn't know Surefire makes anything that costs $29. The only QR stuff I've seen from them has ARMS mounts. Which product are you talking about? I couldn't find it on their site. Thanks.

That Viking Tactics mount looks like a great deal. I'll probably give that thing a go...

    Mount light at 3, 6, 9 or 12 o' clock?

    What's the best position to mount a light, 3, 6, 9 or 12 o' clock and why?

12 o'clock or as close to it as possible is ideal.

6 o'clock would be my second choice.A light at any position is much better than no light at all though.

The reasoning is shooting arround and over barriers.A light at 6 o'clock exposes more when shooting over a barrier(or simply lights up the barrier).A light at say 9 o'clock is going to expose more when shooting arround the right side of a barrier etc.
