    Smith M&P VTAC Thoughts?

Anybody have one? It's been a wasteland at the local cop shop lately. LOTS of ARs, but ALL are floor samples only - not for sale (just for tease).

Lo and behold, today I saw a new model, a S&W 15VTAC, and it was not just a sample. This thing is nicely outfitted, and a real departure from my other ARs. I've seen these in the S&W catalog, but it never lit me up until I got my hands on one.

Thoughts? Experiences? Rumor, innuendo, my-cousin's-friends-next-door-neighbor says...?

I have had one since the first of October. I have found it to be very accurate, extremely reliable and a pleasure to shoot. It made it through a TigerSwan/Brian Searcy class back in last November without any problems.

    Initial impressions.

    JFreuler,

Thanks for all the excellent info. Looks like you're the net authority on the M&P VTAC - googling the subject brings up your 'initial impressions' post on several different boards.

Given that the VTAC is the only M&P 15 with a 1/7 twist, any reason to think Smith went with a milspec gas tube port size?

Here's a little info from Shot '09 with SGM Kyle E. Lamb discussing the collaboration with S&W.

Good stuff. Anyone run that JP trigger through the wringer? JFreuler reports taking one through a class with a round count of about 1K in a couple of days, if memory serves.

I can pick up one of these VTAC numbers for $1508.00 OTD, but
I'd like to hear from others who haven't had their JP trigger spontaneously combust under hard use first.

Man, this AR shortage has been good in at least one respect. I've been able to sell an older, upgraded BM (7 years old / at least 10K rounds) for $1300.00 and another newer one with no extras at all for $1200.00. With only a little cash thrown in, I've been able to trade up to a DDM4 and either this VTAC or a M&P15T.
Ya just gotta haunt the gunstores!

Buy the gun. If the trigger goes tits up replace it with good parts, or buy the gun replace the trigger and then sell the JP trigger to a three gunner.

I'd check with Grant about availability and price, if I remember right he had it at a pretty good deal.
