I carry my SAK Huntsman constantly because the tools enable me to do more, and it shows I have more wear on it then anything. (cheap)
I have my Swiss Bianco Neck Angel packed in my GHB. It is lightweight and fixed. (expensive)
I sometimes carry my Eickhorn und Solingen, Ltd PTR Woodland II folder. (expensive)
I have a Böker/Magnum airweight in the center console of my car just in case I need to cut my belt. (I figured having a knife in my pocket and another in reach work better just in case.) (cheap)
First knife I ever carried was my Dad's old boyscout knife that I have no clue who made it. I lost it unfortunately as a kid.
Second was a run of the mill SAK, actually lost as a kid.
Third I ever carried, still have it is a personal treasure, was my Grandpa's Buck knife. The blade has been ground down from sharpen over more decades then I have been alive, and I am 32.
I conclude with what a friend of mine says, "if it works, it ain't stupid."

Just as there are differences between a HiPoint, a Glock, and a custom 1911, there are differences between a Chinese import, CRKT, Strider, and a custom made. The differences are in quality of material, design, assembly, attention to detail, and robustness. The ability to appreciate these characteristics come with experience and proficiency.
That being said, a cheap kinfe that fits your needs will be a better choice than one that is designed for a different purpose.
