WOW...This oughta be a sticky for gas pistons SOMEWHERE!!!
- Either you're part of the problem or you're part of the solution or you're just part of the landscape - Sam (Robert DeNiro) in, "Ronin" -
Impressive. Very impressive Molon.
Two points:
(1) I've read that not only is the spigot spring required to relieve stress on the gas pin, but also the front handguard bracket (just behind the gas block) needs to be there to fill the gap between the gas piston housing and the gas block. Without that bracket, the gas piston housing transfers the forward force of returning to battery to the gas pin; with it, the gas piston housing transfers some of the force through the bracket and into the FSB. Someone here (or on the TOS) wrote that without the bracket "they got tired of replacing gas tube pins"; he had removed it to use a free float handguard.
(2) Bushmaster's version of the Ares kit includes a clamp to further fix the gas piston housing to the barrel. This might eliminate the contact you observed between the housing and hand guard.
Now a request: do you notice any wear in the buffer tube or the rear of the lower receiver from carrier tilt? I understand some have issues with this, but maybe not all do.
Again, excellent job!
Molon--thank you for posting your efforts; once again, you have done a superb job.
could you name them please ? although i currently have a couple piston rifles, i would like to preview a few and do a conversion on a spare upper i have laying around.., i am thoroughly convinced that gun/AR-15 manufacturers will make pistons and eventually replace D.I. uppers in the not too distant future.
that was the most comprehensive review of any piston system i've read yet. thanks for taking the time to do that - it was very informative!
Thanks to all for the kind words.
All that is necessary for trolls to flourish, is for good men to do nothing.
Very cool Molon. Shows one of the main reasons I find myself shooting my XCR far more than my AR.
