I second this. I spent twelve months in Iraq, and several of my soldiers did their time in Afghanistan. Socks, I used WigWam 40 Below wool socks, they held up through the whole deployment. I like the issues insoles, so no help there. Gerber multitools [I]can[I] be issued, depending on the commander and supply sergeant. A good laptop can be a lifesaver when you're killing time.

get him two pairs of Dr Scholls insoles, like the kind for the really overweight people (once you add in all the gear, it's kinda the same thing) they're green if i remember correctly. In all honesty, good insoles are the best thing since sliced bread.

I didn't mean my comment to be insulting to any service.

As it is, it winds up that the kid is Guard, should have been trained to some degree of a standard, which is certainly not that weapons maintenence or cleaning is the responsibility of anyone but him. As such, it sounds like the individual is failing to live up to the training provided.

I'd get him a nice leatherman type tool. I've always found them quite handy.

On another note, I can't imagine any branch of the military doesn't teach folks how to perform operator maintenance on their weapons

The only corners cut against Guardsmen are in issuing fewer Class A uniforms!
I know what you mean about the Class A uniform. I am a prior service (USMC and Navy) that has been in the guard for over five years now, and I still don't have a complete Class A uniform!

I didn’t think much of it either … but consider the source. At least USAF vets can spell.
