Nobody,
I don't think that F2S was picking on anyone, just having some good ol' interservice rivalry fun. And yes he does wear the uniform. He is one of Uncle Sams Misguided Children (USMC) which is also why he can't spell.![]()

Well, it's a given that stereotypes aren't 100% true or even close to that. You can cite good Air Force examples all you want and other services can cite bad Air Force examples as well. Are we done with this stuff now?

Since he is going with the guard....and most active units have limited amounts of the ACOG, you could get him a version of the ACOG that he feels he could use for the deployment. As it was said, Afghanistan is much different than Iraq. In Afghanistan most engagements will be a good distance away and a powerd optic is an excellent choice for operations in Afghanistan. An aimpoint will do wonders too so it is up to his preference.
I was in Afghanistan and the ACOG was the optic of choice for me and a lot of others...again, IDing a target in a compound from high ground can give an advantage when going in.
I know that is a high dollar item but I spent it and would do so again. Additionally, after the deployment he has a great optic for a personnal weapon.

If he has an HVAC MOS, can't see the need for an ACOG.
Chances are , he will spend the majority of his time inside the wire.
the will to win is nothing without the will to prepare.
A few things that served me well in Afghanistan
1. Good multi purpose tool. I used my Super Leatherman for everything, even opening 14.5mm ammo cans when nothing else was available. When I returned I sent it back to leatherman where they overhauled it completely free of charge.
2. Large Camelback. I was issued a few of them, do not know about NG guys.
3. Good shower shoes. I HATE the PX cheapies. Buy something that will dry fast..and light.
4. GOOD socks. And I mean good. There is nothing more that I hate than a pair of socks that are constantly needing to be pulled up.
5. Cleaning Kit. The GI kit is okay, but I also added a few pieces from an Otis kit (Which I like). A boresnake was also mentioned before, these are very fast and efficient for a quick cleaning.
6. Knifes, I used a smaller fixed blade benchmade that was issued to me. Worked great and it was not very big. I do not like big and expensive knifes.
7. Holsters. If he is going to be issued a pistol he will need a good holster. Try to find something in Kydex or the like. Stay away from cheap stuff.
8. Laptop. Not that you would want to spend this type of money, but he sure as hell needs to. There will be a hell of a lot of time to kill after dark there. This makes it pass a little faster.
One of the best things that you can do for him would be to send morale boxes. Buy his favorite magazines and movies and ship them monthly to him. He will look forward to it and so will his buddies. There is really not a need to send to many food items since most of that stuff can be had at the base stores.
SPOT ON, M240B.
My son has been to Iraq four tours and one in Afghanistan most requested > Copenhagen Snuff
Yup the State side stuff, not the formaldehyde crap...
