Would a bipod help with accuracy?

I am 56 years old, and never shot a rifle/handgun for the first time until the last week of October 2008. I have been classified as a right wing extremist from that point forward. My wife talked me into getting two S&W MP15's, one for each of us.
Leupold scopes, and we shoot at 200 yards. She is a little better than me. I recently purchased a DPMS LR308 AP4. With the MP15, I can keep my scope on the 200 yard target shot after shot, but with the .308 the kick causes it to fly all over the place. I am using a Leupold on the AP4 as well. I have been shooting from a bench using a carpet covered wooden block as a rest. I notice at the range that many of the more experienced shooters use bipods. Before I drop a bunch of money on a Harris, would, could, should it help?

A muzzle brake would help tame it a bit, but with a sonic trade-off, however...

Help with accuracy - probably not
Quicker follow up shots - probably will help

    Short answer is "NO".

Bipods "hop" depending on what surface you shoot off. The best rest is a sand bag or even a 3-day pack will gear in it.

Spend some money and at a very minimum, go to a 2 day precision rifle basics class.

There is no piece of gear that will make you more accurate if you do not posses basic marksmanship skills.

I agree on a nice pack. I just use a GI type buttpack with my crap in it.

It depends though. Bipods certainly have their place.

    ...like so...

The Caldwell Tack-driver is a pretty good off-the-shelf sand bag for about $45:

What would be a good filler for this bag in a humid climate?

    Thanks

Mine came filled with some type of sand(its' heavy too). To make it light weight you could use Air-soft ammo. I use them in my rock-sock; they are light weight and pretty stable.

Thanks, I was thinking about airsoft pellets since my son has a stash.
