any coasties or people with knowledge?

Im 20 years old, my ultimate goal in life is to become a Navy SEAL after i finish college. Im a red blooded American through and through. Im currently in college and paying my way through out of my own pocket, going part time, working full time and then some.

Because I have a desire to serve, yet I really want to get my college done full time, Ive been strongly considering the coast guard or coast guard reserve, and transferring after my enlistment is up. I've also herd that the coast guard is an excellent branch to be a part of. By joining the reserve, i would be able to get my school payed for, and attend full time, while still getting my foot in the door with the military and being able to serve my country.

What I would really like to know, before I talk to a recruiter is; are there any high speed jobs in the coast guard? I would like something where I get to board ships, shoot up some pirates, drug dealers etc... yall probably get the idea. Is there any rate that i could get that does this sort of thing? I have herd that the coast guard has a new rate "ME" Maritime Enforcement Specialist.

Im in excellent physical condition and am a really outdoorsy person. I guess you could say I'm a type "A" personality.

I'm not looking to go into the military just to get my college done and a pay check, Its always what I have wanted to do and it is the life i feel very strongly I want to live. A paycheck and a free education is a really nice perk.

The coast guard appeals to me right now because i would be able to serve from the CONUS and I would be able to do some great things for my country while furthering my education; and from what I understand it is very easy to transfer from the Coat Guard into the Navy, I have also read that there is a program for promising coasties to go to BUD/S.

Any info and help will be much appreciated!

    Thanks,

    Ryan

Join the Marines . Honestly though best person to talk to would be a Recruiter about jobs but take everything they say with a grain of salt. Good luck!

As a Navy guy I can tell you there are plenty of high speed jobs in the CG. An old navy buddy (corpsman) even did some time with the Coasties patrolling the Caribbean interdicting Cuban refugees. You get a lot of experience/responsibility that you might not get otherwise in the Navy.

Someone even confirmed this weekend that there is a program for "puddle pirates" to apply/indoc for BUDs.

That said the SEALs are an extremely demanding program, so start working out now, but realize it's much more about mental toughness than physically demanding. While stationed at NAVMEDCTR San Diego, we got a lot of guys that were injured/med boarded from BUDs.

Few things suck worse than being cold and wet and you'll get a lot of both in BUDs. I might consider being a rescue swimmer in the CG as being more relevant to BUDs than being a shooter.

I worked with some Coasties in Gitmo, they are definitely good to go. Running around in their gunboats and dropping us Jarheads off at the beach. Not to burst your bubble but not everyone can be a SEAL. Make sure you have plenty of back up plans and what not. Also don't just limit yourself, why not check out EOD and SWCC as well. Everyone is high speed and low drag in their way. EOD has some awesome toys if your a gear queer.

One of my buddies is a Coastie. CG has alot of HSLD jobs, mostly involving drug interdiction.

That having been said, if your goal is to be a SEAL you shouldn't really be joining another service than the Navy. Sure they can let you transfer, but will they is another question.

thanks for all the replys so far guys, ive gotten nothing but great info!

i understand that, not every one can be a seal. Ive been preparing for this mentally and physically since i graduated high school. its what im set on doing. However, ill be making sure there are other options as, i realize shit happens.

My physical and mental fitness is in order. I realize that nobody is really ready for what they get hit with in BUD/S but, I feel like im very well prepared, mabey more so then most. I work out five days a week (mon-fri) and have a grueling work out routine that consists of biking, running, and lots of body weight stuff along with some olympic lifts. Im also a triathlete... im hoping to do a half ironman this year and a whole one next. the main thing holding me back is i need a nice bike.

As for the coast guard, and transferring to the navy... after my enlistment is up, worst case i could re enlist with the Navy. However, my reason for wanting to go coast guard is i really want to serve NOW and get my college done, and I feel that, given my personality, and my physical conditioning, i could do a lot of good for my country while gettin an education in the coastguard, and then using that education and experience earned in the coast guard to further my self even more.
A truly deadly warrior has a good mind as well. I feel like i could do the most good in the CG or CG reserves vs. the navy reserves. I would also be serving mostly CONUS, so my chances of gettin deployed to the middle of no where are slim.

Also, homeland defense, and drug interdiction operations are a mission that i put a high priority on... i dont care to much for drugs, dealers, or the lifestyle that goes along with them. I also dont care too much for terrorists.

EDIT: gentoo, once in the Navy, EOD and SWCC interests me a lot as well, especially as a sort of back up plan if the SEAL thing were not to work out.

Wait - you are in college?

Why aren't you talking to someone in NROTC?

Check out the CG reserves Port security units (PSU). PSU 307 is local here and a good buddy of mine just finished with them after being in the army for most of his life. He is local leo on swat and claimed the unit fed his high speed needs well.

Good luck. Navy had (has) an "x" program that allowed you a "shot" at the seals contractually. I think we've had a discussion about said program on here before in depth.
