5.56 CAN owners ~ Do it again? Yes or No?

I'm concidering my forst can and want to know if those who have cans for their AR's.... if you had it to do all over again, would you buy a can for your AR? I'm told they are still too loud to shoot with no ear protection, so why bother?? This is a serious question... not goofin. Why spend $800 or whatever on a can if you still must wear muffs?

    Thanks!

shooting suppressed while fun initially, becomes overrated and a pain in the ass. Cleaning is exponentially increased. $$$ is increased.

While you can shoot 5.56 suppressed w/out earpro, it isnt advised over long periods of time.

I still wear hearing pro while shooting just for that reason.

    +1 to Connor.

My reasons exactly for sticking to pistol cailber rounds for suppression. 9mm's and .22's are all that I'll probably spend my money on right now. Anything larger either 5.56 or 7.62 rounds will still require hearing pro so why bother? Not only that but the added expense of sub-sonic rounds will not only eat up a budget in no time but decrease the usefullness of the round.

I'm not a "Secret Squirrel" warrior so I don't "NEED" to hide my muzzle signature and honestly shooting suppressed isn't like the movies. It's still loud, not like a gun shot loud but nothing like the movies protray.

So, if I were you I see if your dealer does demo's and try out some pistol cans...JMHO....I have 2 .22lr cans and 2 9mm cans and couldnt be happier. Also check out the Silencer Talk forum...TONS OF GREAT INFO THERE.

    Good Luck,

I went with a YHM Phantom 5.56. Reason being, is that thier customer service is really good and the value is at my price point. I don't plan on going into battle or using it to save my lives and the lives of others. From a purely recreational use, it is perfect for me. I've sent at least 2000rds down range with my can and didn't use earpro one bit. All the noise comes from the crack of the sound barrier. Other than that, all I hear is gas and action. It does get the gun dirtier but I clean my weapons after every range use when it's been fired with 10 rounds or a 1000. Now I own a YHM Phantom in both 5.56 and 7.62, and a YHM .22 Mite. Currently in the works for 2 SBR stamps and once my local gun store gets a AAC M4-2000 in, i'll be starting the paperwork on that.

    This.

I have a 6.8 can and I only use it now on my 18" SPR. Much less blowback, much less cleaning, aids accuracy, reduces recoil. Shooting my SBRs suppressed is not so fun.

First suppressor? I did it in this order, and do not regret it.

    9mm pistol
    22lr rifle/pistol
    5.56

Shooting 5.56 is fine with using a suppressor. It makes communicating on the firing line easier. It makes the shooting session much more enjoyable, for me.

Cleaning is cleaning, whether it's a little or a lot of crap, so that's a push for me.

I still use ear plugs if shooting alone for a lot of rounds.

I have an AAC m4-2000 08model and if I had to do it again, I wouldn't. Also, late last summer the ATF came out with an enforcement of a regulation that means the can can't be replaced with a can with the same serial number. In other words, when you damage the can, and you will, you can't get it replaced. Baffel strikes will eventually happen.

As mentioned by Derek, they are extremely dirty in the AR platform. SBR's are crazy dirty. I have an LMT 10.5 and 14.5 and 2 Colt 16" guns that I have run it on. Even with PRI gasbuster charging handle, you get blowback in your face. I would estimate that each round supressed is the equivalent of 5-10 normal rounds. I actually had to clean the lower after running a couple hundred rounds in the 10.5" and my PMAG's that I used had become so dirty that you could push the rounds into the mag and watch the column come back up. After that I had surpressed only mags as I didn't want to rely on mags that could be that dirty. The sole use I see for it, for personal use, is as a home defense gun. I use my 10.5 with AAC mounted and over all length is about what a 16" gun would be and if I had to use it in the house I could still hear after the first shots were fired.

I wouldn't call any 5.56 can ear safe, though you can certainly run them without discomfort. They are neat for a little while, but not something you really want to use all the time. They are so bad that I considered a Crest Ultrasonic cleaner for the guns, but the cost was about $2k for what I wanted and I could get too much training for that kind of coin.

    Just some things to consider.

I probably wouldn't. I have an Ops 15th, but that has nothing to do with it as I've been exposed to a lot of 5.56 cans. I just haven't gotten the use out of it I expected to, which was mostly to hunt hogs. I haven't shot a single damn one with it.

If all my stuff was stolen today and the insurance paid out, I'd look for a 6.8 AAC M4-2000, which I could then use on the 5.56 if I wanted to for some reason.

Franly, cans in general to me are pretty much a waste. My SBR ARs on the other hand? Best money I've ever spent on an AR. Ironically I only bought the SBRs to suppress, and now I shoot them all the time but without the can.

5.56mm is my favorite can and the one I would buy if I could only have one can. Then I would get a .308 rifle can. Then a .22lr. Then 9mm.

I also have the YHM QD Phantom. It does make shooting better in some ways but in my rifles i get a decent amount of blowback and that gets annoying fast. On my SBR (which i really like to shoot more and built it for the suppressor) It does better since i have a gasbuster on that rifle. I have shot it on my .22's including a walther p22 . Slightly muzzle heavy on the pistol but near silent on it and the rifle. If i did it again i think i may get more use out of a .22 suppressor or a 9MM.

The main reason i wanted one was to be quieter at the range and try to help out my hearing. I do still wear muffs if im in a somewhat confined part of the range like a pistol bay but on the rifle range where its more open i dont need them.

If i were rich i would own one in all calibers i shoot but that isnt the case. I think you should demo some to get a better idea of what you want and what works best for your uses. Depending on the rifles i had, if i were going to get another one i would look into one of the reflex styles that help with backpressure like the AAC SPR.

With all that said i really like the SBR but dont like having to file travel papers for it if i leave the state with it.
