Generators are only helpful if you're home to start them up..or willing to spend more than its worth to me to have it integrated into your electrical system. A back up sump pump is less expensive.
I still haven't done anything about it..should probably but there's been a lot of other projects to work on and I've barely started.

Battery operated backup sump pump....Get it. Google them, I got a Bulldog, and compare the prices and reviews.
It's saved my basement from flooding more than once during power outages during storms.
Worth every penny, especially considering what carpet/bookshelves/floor mouldings/etc all cost.
Generators are nice, but the ones that start themselves when power blows are expensive as all get out, and you don't want to have to be at home to crank the sonofagun up.
