There are a few reasons to do this but one of the best is free life-time calibrations for your tools, including torque wrenches.
Snap-On doesn't provide free recalibration unless the tool is broken and needs to be repaired.

If you give it to the dealer just to have it done there is a charge.

You need a better rep then. Mine has always done mine for free. Conversely, I kept a rather large private account for 10 years too, I did more as a individual weekly than a lot of shops did.

I always got charged for it. For what its worth, I was the only one they ever had send their wrenches in to be re-calibrated. I haven't done any of mine in years because I really do not do any more of that work anymore (Humdallah).

My rep did suck, but almost all the Snap-On guys suck. I spent a lot more than the average guy as I set up two locations and in all the years I dealt with them I only had one guy that was great.

Anyway, no matter you buy it, Snap-On will stand behind it. Being a one time customer isn't going to forge any bond with a dealer so my advice would be that if you do go with Snap-On go where you can get the best price.

X2, I got mine at Sears. Come to think of it, a lot of my AR building tools are from Sears and Home Depot.
