And also, I honestly don't know AR's that well and didn't know if some inherent design element made them any "less safe" when handled that way.
ARs are not drop safe, and less so when the safety is off. there's no pin disconnect, and all that keeps your hammer down is about 1/16th inch of sear.

How's it do at the range?

Have you considered the MIAD grip with the battery insert for your battery problem?

You can configure it very much like the profile of the grip you have.
I'm waiting on the MOE Plus which is supposed to have a rubbery texture like the Hogue.

I keep mine on the bedstand, with a full mag in, bolt back, on fire, door closed. Looks just like that.

Good looking weapon! Regarding battery storage---two options come to mind. A VFG with storage for at least two batteries, a watertight plug for your hogue, or keep some in your pocket at all times. I keep two CR123As in my back pocket for my 6PLED I keep on my belt. My LMT has the sopmod stock so it automatically has room for 6 batteries there. The ergo grip on mine can store two 123As, and the UTG VFG on my beretta holds two 123s for the TLR-1 and pressure pad I have on that gun. My aimpoint red dot sight also uses 123s, so there's no confusion as to which type of battery goes to which accessory---they all run off 123s I think a VFG is a perfectly good way of adding storage, without a ton of weight.

I keep mine, on fire, hammer down, bolt closed of course with a full mag. I would call this "cruiser ready". (OK been reading too many shotgun forums as of late) One pull on the charging handle and the weapon is ready to rock. I keep my shotgun the same way.

triburst- Nice stick. What is in the practice cases where the bullet goes? You are braver than I, I'd be afraid of Murphy mixing in a live round into the bunch of brass practice cases.
