I wish that they could talk; the history in them amazes me. My Grandfather was an RTO in the 5th ID during WWII. He received three Bronze Stars and two Purple Hearts, but died when I was a child so I was never able to hear any stories directly from him. I remember one story of a bullet hitting his helmet, ricocheting around in it and exiting the helmet, leaving only scratches. I was always astonished by that, looking at his helmet with the two holes that were perpendicular to eachother. He was able to bring back these pistols and a Czech-made VZ24 rifle. All of them have matching serial numbers and the pistols are in good working order. The Luger's holster even has the German soldier's name inscribed into the inside. The rifle may work fine, but it hasn't been fired since 1945. It was weird when I was cleaning it and restoring it a bit, I had to clean out a bunch of carbon from the chamber... 1945 carbon. He also brought back some Nazi uniform items, but other family members have those. I really need to reread his award writeups. And his Battalion has a journal of their experiences through the European theater that I have to get a copy of.
