The "seam" is between the cap and the grip. The bottom of the grip is cut off and the cap is glued to the newly cut surface. If done properly (as above) then it looks like the cap is simply screwed into the grip as normal.

Well this is a bit misleading, as the entire assembly is the grip, and certainly the entire portion above the cap is the grip, so that's a bit off, in terms of proper description. However, I understand your last sentence, and that certainly makes sense.
The bottom line, is that it's CUT OFF, and then the cap is glued OVER the cut/seam, and it therefore APPEARS as if it is a factory NEW, OEM part, with zero modifications.
Thanks for clearing that up DRich, and thanks caporider for posting that awesome pic. That is just what I'm after to experiment with on the SCAR. I've never had a desire to experiment around with VFG's, until now, and I was just definitely wanting the SHORTEST grip possible/feasible.
