I generally take the approach if I can potential federal prison time for it, I don't do it. It isn't really that comforting that dope dealers are usually the only people hammered. All it would take is a crazy DA or BATFE agent. My bread and butter is criminal defense. Most DAs, ADAs and law enforcement are regular ol' reasonable folks. However, just like everybody else, a certain percentage of them are sadists, crazies and plain old meanies.

When I was waiting on my M16 to clear I came across a good deal on a 416 Upper (10 inch). I arranged to have it stored at the Sheriffs Department out of an insane abundance of caution. I have seen too many folks destroyed for marginal crap to fool around.

If I had the money, I'd decorate my Christmas tree with SBR uppers.

Thanks markm, I'll try to resist that temptation.

So basically, if I order one, it would be wise to have it shipped to my dad and let him store it for me in his gunsafe until the paperwork goes through, since he doesn't own an AR. That about sum it up?

Yep, that's about it, err on the side of caution.

And don't get me wrong, Markm is essentially right. The odds are microscopic that you will be caught or be harassed. I am just hyper-cautious.

Completely agreed. I'd rather just take solace in making sure I'm not in any muddy legal waters. It's not worth it, Office Space summed it up "we're not going to white-collar resort prison. No, no, no. We're going to federal POUND ME IN THE ASS prison."

I've had several SBR uppers while waiting for paperwork. If you are really that concerned you can always store the upper at a relatives or friends house that does not have a lower stored there as well. As long as you do not build the rifle prior to your tax stamp being in hand, you are GTG.

Being an LEO who would be treated as any other citizen by the ATF, I wouldn't worry about it. Just my .02
Only hits count......you can not miss fast enough to catch up
