If it did not have a captive front pushpin it was probably a Colt 602 as the Army bought alot of these before the adoption of the M16 series.

One thing I forgot to add is the Marines used a number of regular M16s that were loaned by the Navy.

Pictures can be found in Vietnam showing this.

I also had a GM Hydramatic M16A1 in basic 09-12/86. I even worked on some here back in 2005 that belonged to a National Guard unit.

The Air Force reconfigured all it's M16's to "A2ish". They changed FCG's stocks and uppers. The only unconverted lowers I personally haven't seen are the GUU/GAU guns.

How did the barrel twist work between the M16 and M16A1 was one 1-14 and the other 1-12 or do I have this all wrong?

both were 1/12 as far as I know. I remember going to the range in '83 or '84 and trying to qualify slinging M855 down range (we were one of the last in the Brigade to give up our A1's). It didn't go well at all.

early Model 601 (AR15) had 1/14 twist IIRC...
    604 (M16) and 603 (M16A1) both have 1/12.

as for 1/14 vs 1/12, here is what Ekie from TOS wrote about it:

While the standard 1/14 .224 barrel twist was quite successful in commercial firearms it did not serve the AR-15 well. M193 ammunition utilizes a boat tail projectile rather then the more common flat base. Boat tail bullets have less bearing surface to engage the rifling of the bore then flat base bullets of the same weight. The result was that the 55 grain FMJBT bullets were on the edge of stability when fired from the AR-15. Accuracy testing conducted by the US Army, US Air Force, and the NRA showed unacceptable accuracy with the 1/14 twist. Because of these factors a twist change to 1/12 was approved on July 26th, 1963.

At my work, we are still using Harrington & Richardson M16A1's.
