"Back in the day" when we had plenty of 20's in the Army, you could take 7 20rd mags, load them with the ammo out of a bandoleer and stuff the mags back into the bandoleer. Each pocket on the bandoleer carried 20rds (2 ten round stripper clips) each, so the 20 round mags fit in there fine. Then you could easily carry around extra loaded mags, instead of stripper clips you'd have to dick with. It was slower to get at the mags than an ammo pouch, but faster overall than trying to fishout the clip guide, clips, reload the mags, etc. You still had your ammo pouches full of mags that you'd use first anyway.

These days, rather than all kinds of chest rigs, or what-not, an M4 with a 30 and a bandoleer with 7 20rd mags would make a perfectly simple and utilitarian kit for a car trunk.

The current issued bandoleers will hold 30 round mags if you pull out the little white string. I am surprised that many folks don't know that. I still like the feel of how a 20 round bandoleer rides around your body compared to the new ones.

I just got off a mission in which I had a... 20 round Pmag as my primary. Main reason being the ease of use inside a vehicle and the lighter weight. I orginally sneaked it over here for use with my SPR, but use it as my default magazine for my M4 as well.

Twenty rounds is still a lot of ammo to do good work with. Yesterday, one of our sister teams was hit in a complex attack. The average amount of rounds expended per man as ten. Part of the reason was that you have to be selective of your targets and not shoot everything on two feet.

I was the one who made the statement based on a class with Chuck Taylor about 8 years ago. This was in response to a question as to why I was using 20's (along with 30's). At the time he considered them the most reliable and, therefore, the best. I do not know what his current thinking is.

Later discussion of this issue with Larry Vickers (instructor for the above mentioned training) confirmed that in his experience that quality 30 round mags were very reliable and GTG.

I like them for less weight, prone shooting behind berms, etc.

Seems like 'war belts' are becoming more common. 20s in open top pouches (Eagle, Maxpedition, etc) work pretty well and don't interfere as much with chest rigs, etc. Very similar to the rifle bags, a 20 in the rifle in the safe saves alot of space.

I bought some 20 rounders for many of the same reasons listed here by others. I leave my carbines with a 20-rd PMAG inserted (empty chamber, closed bolt), and keep the 30-rd mags in my chest rig for when/if I have to go mobile.

    - fit my AR case more easily
    - fit inside a vehicle, etc
    - fit inside smaller pockets, pouches, etc
    - fit under my rifle when on a bipod (prone)
    - doesn't bang into me as much when I have the rifle slung
    - they are a bit lighter

I think I heard about that one. I hope everyone is OK. Be safe.

I now keep 20 rounders in the guns when stored in the safe.

Since it was mentioned earlier I gave it a try, and you know what, it works well for my safe setup. Now I know what I can use those extra 20 round Pmags for.
Only hits count......you can not miss fast enough to catch up
