I finally got to handle one tonight. I wanted to like this gun. I really did. But I just could not bring myself to pull the trigger on it.
To front heavy, felt somehow unrefined, and I hate the Mini 14 style FH.

I've seen different pictures, one showing what you describe and another showing a conventional bolt, but w/o any gas rings installed. Both are from production samples so it's not clear in my mind what the config of the bolt is.
FWIW, the User Manual depicts a conventional looking bolt.

The carrier will take a regular bolt with rings. I installed a Colt bolt in it with good rings and it slides in and out with hardly any effort so I think the carrier internal dimensions are slightly bigger than a regular AR carrier.

and exactly why not ? i want to politely say B.S.,The piston system has issues that I cannot go into.if i knew a gun had "issues", i would certainly inform the gun buyers of these "issues", if i didn't already have the best piston $$$$ can buy i would get one just to discover the "issues" and inform those who might consider buying one.
thank you sir for your input, which is 95% correct most of the time![]()
I handled one of these Ruger AR's at a local store tonight and a few things about the gun struck me as odd compared to other AR's I am used to seeing.
1. Roll pins in the reciever just short of where it joins the Troy rail behind the chamber.
2. The gas block is roll pinned to the Troy rail and the outer diameter of the gas block is such that it touches the inner diameter of the rail. It is a BIG gas block.
3.The barrel isnt what I would call huge but it looked almost as thick as a Colt HBAR under the rail system.
4. The barrel does NOT free float.
Is all the different hardware on the front end of the gun to make it "Proprietary" or does all the above have some benifit?
I bought one today and have already put four magazines through it. Using WOLF 55JHP and some old 55FMJ handloads, I had to turn the gas regulator to "3" to get proper cycling. The gun runs fine with Speer Gold Dot and Winchester Q3131 on "2" and it seems accurate. I only shot at rocks and misc. junk but I'm hoping to get the gun on paper tomorrow.
My carbine has what appears to be a standard bolt including gas rings. The extractor has an O-ring on the spring but no spring insert.
The LPK looks like it's standard cheapo DPMS or whatever as does the stock.
I'm going to venture a guess and say that Ruger didn't stake the stock castle nut on the stock because they figured many uses would swap out the factory stock for a VLTOR or something similar.
Got to fondle one at Virginia Arms today and damn that things is freaking heavy!!

What Happened to the American dream? It came true. You're looking at it.
Yeah, it is a little front heavy. But that little extra weight up front makes for a steady rifle when shooting unsupported.
The rifle's not perfect. I, too, wish Ruger would have used a 1x7 twist and a lighter profile barrel. I also don't like the lack of a front sling attachment point. The only sling swivel on the gun is on the M4 stock. I also don't care for the Hogue pistol grip and would prefer a Tango Down battle grip. And I think the little spring finger that locks the gas regulator could be easily lost in the field.
I should be able to get some rounds on paper this morning. I've got some 75gr Serbian ammo around here someplace and I'll see what that does.
My dos centavos opinion is that Ruger went with that heavy profile because the rail isn't free floating the barrel AND a heavier profile takes less lathe time.
