Ruger SR-556 Interim Report
Greetings fellow Ravens, if I have already shared this please forgive the repeat. Just got off a long class and had over 700 email messages to go over.
We finished out an 8 day cycle and I let everyone shoot the Ruger I had time to let them shoot. We put right at 1100 rounds through it. Not a single malfunction to this point, using Mag Pull, Lancer, H&K and standard G.I.
mags.
It still looks nice and clean and I am not going to clean it other than perhaps to try to get the copper out of the barrel after a good session on paper at 100 to measure the group (I won't get to do that this week I think).
I have not had a chance to put it to the accuracy test (other than hitting targets of opportunity out to 300 meters but that is no measure as they were not small).
I did remove the factory trigger and dropped in a Rock River 2-stage (not because I wanted that specific trigger but it was available to me while I was stuck at the training site). Have not measured it but I suspect it goes
about 3 pounds. Probably the last 400-500 rounds were fired with this in
place.
I took a chance and did my normal demo of shooting 5.56 brass utilizing only the front sight. It went OK.
The gun is still heavy. I did get a chance to heft LWRC, LMT and Bushmaster piston guns this week (but not shoot them) all were lighter but all had thin barrels also. If any of those are adjustable it was not readily evident (perhaps there is an adjustment under the rails/handguards).
In any case the Ruger may not make me a fan of the AR but it is sure useable. In a larger caliber with a lighter barrel I could sure warm up to it. Even as it is I probably will keep this gun. Probably will use it in the next class that comes up.
Jim H.
