Just looking over the pics the bolt carrier has an unshrouded firing pin and a notched hammer![]()
Was able to examine an SR-556 today.
Price was $1,540.
The lower had a 600 lb. GI trigger, selector was rather gritty, and the buttstock was what you would find on a Oly arms entry level carbine. This rifle needs a side folding Magpul MOE type buttstock. Other than these complaints, the rest of the lower appeared fine.
Gas system appears to be much more rugged than the one on the Sig. 556's that was stacked beside it.
Upper seemed sound looks and parts wise... except that the rail unit is held on by ROLL PINS!!! I kid you not. A couple of .02 cent roll pins holding together a $1,600 carbine. I hate roll pins... I guess they work OK... but I can't stand them.
For the money, I would take the SR-556 over the Sig 556 Commando that was to it's left, but not over the LMT Defender 2000 that was to it's right.
Yes.
To reply to the others, I would take the Ruger over the SIG-Sauer 556. I know how to make the Ruger work. Can't say the same about the wannabe SIG 550/551/552 rifle from SIG named the 556.
Standard positions ALL ammo I tested worked. The Ruger will work 99% of the time if not used in odd shooting positions.
Odd ammo: Only stoppages were with 50gr American Eagle hollowpoint and Radway Green 62gr FMJ......this means don't shoot either ammo in odd shooting positions and the rifle is VERY likely to keep on working....YMMV.

You are correct, do need some way to get the bolt back into battery of course, I was just thinking out loud with the Sig 556 comparison and my fondness for being able to fold a stock to the side.
I'm not so sure the AK people who have found a fondness for the Sig 556 Commando, will be all that quick to rush out and spend $1,600 on this type of piston upper.
It's high time there was a in depth comparison between the Sig556 and the rest of the herd by someone who knows what they're about.
